I smile as I lean over to graze her earlobe with my teeth. “You look stunning, doll. I’m going to enjoy ripping that dress off your tight little body later tonight. And if you’re lucky, I’ll even bend you over the hood of my car and fuck you from behind on our way home.”

Her cheeks turn bright red while the corners of her mouth twitch. It is this shade of red that I love the most. It spreads across her cheeks down to her full breasts. That blush tells me she wants to skip dinner with Lev and go back inside as much as I do.

It’s cute how she is still so responsive to my words. I should keep her on the edge for the rest of our lives. Keep her soaking wet for me all the time.

Fuck, we should skip dinner.

Sophia’s gaze burns with lust as it drags down my body. “You look dapper too. We better get going before you convince me to go back inside.”

I laugh and start the car, pulling away from the house. “Your wish is my command.”

She snorts and playfully rolls her eyes before reaching out to take my hand. Her fingers lace with mine as my other hand is on the wheel. ‘How was your day?”

I shrug. “It was all right. I spent most of the day dealing with a couple of suppliers that I need more product from.”

Sophia nods, not asking what the suppliers are for or what the product is. That’s one of the things I’m grateful for. As much as I like being the Pakhan, there are times when I just want to shut off the rest of the world and enjoy the time that I have with her for what it is.

She may not have been raised in this life since she was born, but she saw enough once she moved in with her father to understand what I’m talking about and dealing with.

“How was your day?” I ask, running my thumb over the back of her hand. “You had some classes today, right?”

“Yeah. A couple of different ones. I had an interesting lab, but there’s a test coming up on what we learned today. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to get through it.”

“You’re an intelligent woman, doll. There is no way that you’re not going to do amazing on that test.”

She gives me a smile that lights up the entire car. “Thanks. I think I’m nervous about this dinner too. We haven’t spent much time around your uncle Lev since we got married. I hope he’s going to like me.”

“I am sure he will.” I squeeze her hand and try to give her the reassurance she needs. “He'll love you because you're mywife and you have a way of charming everyone around you. Nik will be there too. He’ll probably take some of the spotlight for a bit.”

“Oh,” she says, looking out the window and rolling her bottom lip into her mouth.

As we turn into Uncle Lev’s driveway, the rest of the day's stress begins to fade. My shoulders slump and my grip on Sophia’s hand relaxes.

The charming white house is the kind of place most people wouldn’t expect a member of the Bratva to live in. It’s a quaint family home where everyone is happy, and no one would ever suspect criminal activities here.

I used to spend long days here in the summer, running around with my brother and cousins. It was a simpler time back then. Back then, I wasn't afraid that the people closest to me would betray me. The only duties and responsibilities we had were to learn the customs of the Bratva and have a fun time.

“Are you okay?” Sophia asks as I park the car and let go of her hand. “If your family is turning against you, then I know it can’t be easy going in there. I want to support you as much as I can.”

I swallow the lump in my throat and get out of the car because I need a moment to myself. I tried not to think about walking into a starving lion’s den. I want to believe that my family would never turn on me.

However, it is in the nature of our business to be the most successful. To survive. Everyone has a line they think they don’t want to cross until they get too close to it.

“I don’t want to think about that tonight,” I say as I open Sophia’s door. I hold out a hand, smiling slightly when she puts her soft palm in mine.

“How do you want tonight to go?” She stands up and runs her hands over my chest, smoothing out the wrinkles in my black shirt. “Whichever way you want to play this, you know I’ll be by your side the whole time.”

That’s a good question and one I don’t know how to answer. I am impressed by her words; she sounds so full of confidence that it warms my heart. I am proud of my wife. I brush a strand of hair behind her ear and give her a faint smile.

“You're so fucking cute worrying about me.” I wink. “I want to go in there and pretend everything's fine, just for one more night. I don’t want to sit there and think about the person who could be fucking with me. This is my family. I don’t want to believe that any of them are capable of something like this.”

“Okay,” she smiles, taking my hand in hers and intertwining our fingers. “Let’s have a normal night.”

And in the morning, I will start digging deeper to find out who wants to ruin me.

Chapter 19 - Sophia

The longer I sit at Lev’s wooden dining room table and pretend nothing is wrong, the more I want to scream. All the men are so happy to be together. Although the tension is suffocating the oxygen in the room, they don’t seem to mind.
