“Katie, your car keys, PLEASE!”

As she held the door open, the noise was ringing in the bank while people in the cubicles thought it was the security alarm. Most of them had hit their security buttons and crawled under their desks.

“At least you were closing your account, not opening one.” She brightly told me on the drive home.

CHAPTER 14

BONE APPETIT

My phone buzzed, bringing me out of memory lane.It was Eli.

Hi Katie. Carter and I are going to the Bark Park today if you ladies want to join? (dog emoji) (twins emoji)

I looked over at Dolly who wassnug as a bugin her bed. It was pouring outside, and I was still exhausted from staying up so late. Plus, the whole Carolyn thing lingered. I appreciated that he wanted to maintain a friendship ‘for the dogs,’ but I didn’t know if I was capable of such a thing without my feelings getting in the way. Besides, if Mr. Right fell from the sky, I wouldn’t want to be distracted by Mr. Not Right Now, although I very much wished Eli was the one.

Thank you for the invite. We were up late and just having a lazy day. (nap emoji)

My phone buzzed again.

Okay. Rest up. No emoji?

I started to overthink it and realized he probably thought I’d beenout latewith Taylor. Which was fine, although I’m a good, proper woman and wouldn’twant to stay out late with a man like him, it didn’t matter because Eli wasn’t single.

My phone rang. It was Judy.

“Good morning sunshine!” Her voice on the other end brought warmth into my heart.

“Hi Judy!”

“I thought I’d see how you girls are making out this week. Lots of adjustments I’m sure for both of you.”

“Yes—and you're not going to believe the week I’ve had. Dolly and I were out late last night playing Bingo for charity at a dog diner!”

“What in the world is a dog diner?” Judy’s voice went serious.

“It’s a diner where you can bring your dog. They have a little menu for them and everything.”

Judy laughed. “Wow—my mind went in another direction—and I thought I’d heard it all! That’s great, sweetheart. And your date?”

It seemed like an eternity since then. “It was very short-lived. He was infatuated with the waitress.”

“Oh no! Tell me—hold on, let me get in my comfy chair for this. Oh, dang it! I’ve left my grapes in the dining room. Just a second, sweetie. I’m listening. I just want to hear it all and I have a feeling I’m going to be sitting for quite some time.”

I laughed and tore into the story and included every little detail big or small, remembering what they all wore, and what I wore—fashion was very important to her. Then I told her about Eli and Carolyn being engagedagain, seeing her at the pet store, and so on.

“That brings us up to speed.” I’d been going on for a long time because my phone was hot against my face. “What do you think of it all?”

“I think that there is more to Eli than we think.”

“Yes, I agree with that. But he’s engaged!”

Judy was quiet for a minute, then spoke.

“But is he?”

“She’s wearing aring.”

We both sighed. Judy interjected first. “Maybe she’s engaged to someone else.”
