If she married someone else, he'd have to watch her dance at her wedding with him. Watch her raise babies with him. Watch her smile at someone else the way she smiled at him.

Anger burned inside him, threatening to choke him. He didn't want to see her with anyone else. His stomach twisted, threating to bring his whiskey back up.

But damn her parents and their relationship. Her dad trapped her mom, and he would not make the same mistake. She deserved better.

That didn't mean he had to stand by tonight and watch her. Tonight, she was his.

He breathed deep, trying to get a handle on his rage, then strode through the dancers to tap on the man's shoulders.

"Care if I cut in?"

The man nodded and stepped aside, but Lucy crossed her arms and cocked a hip to one side, a teasing, coy smile on her lips. "Maybe I don't want to dance with you."

Mason narrowed his eyes and swept her into his arms. "Don't test me, little bird. Seeing you in this dress, dancing with some other man? You'll be lucky if I don't take you behind the building, flip up your skirt, spank your ass and fuck you within an inch of your life."

She gasped, her head rearing back to look at him in surprise. Then she grinned. "Promises, promises."

Her teasing words and mischievous grin made some of the tension slip from his shoulders. He spun them about the dance floor. He leaned close to her ear, smelling oranges and the heady aroma that was just her.

"Are you wet at the idea of having sex where anyone can catch us?"

She shuttered a breath and bit her lip. "Maybe. Not sure that I'd be able to orgasm, though. I'd be too worried about being caught. I think that was part of my problem back in high school in that truck."

He growled and kissed the side of her neck. "Challenge accepted."

Just then the lights flickered and someone walked onto the stage. He pulled back as the music stopped. The dancers went to find seats at the tables, so he escorted her to a small table in the corner along the wall.

It was darker in that corner, but he had a good view of the exits and the stage. He held the chair out for her. "Is this alright with you?"

She nodded, and a waitress came to take their order. He vaguely paid attention to the show. It was some sort of Hawaiian legend acted out on stage. They took their masks off to eat, and he was engrossed in watching Lucy's expression as she watched the show.

She was a soothing balm to his tortured soul. He hadn't been looking for her, yet here she was. Everything he'd ever wanted, everything he didn't know he needed.

The audience clapped but Mason could barely hear past the ringing in his ears. He loved Lucy. Everyone loved Lucy, but he loved her more than he ever thought possible.

Guilt speared him because he instantly compared it to Amanda. He'd never felt like this with Amanda. Lucy made him feel alive, useful, protective, and cared for. With Amanda, he'd always had to fight for them.

It had been exhausting. But with Lucy, it was too easy. They got along so well and talked through their issues. He was more open with her than he'd ever been with Amanda, and maybe that was part of the problem.

His throat threatened to close as his eyes stung. The man went back on stage and said something else, then Lucy looked at him with her big, beautiful eyes and smiled softly.

"That was wonderful, don't you think? They're going to have more dancing now. Would you care to dance?"

He shook his head slowly, mesmerized by her. He moved his chair closer and caressed her upper back, causing his stomach to twist. Then he leaned in and met her lips, causing a shock wave to spread throughout his body. His hand cupped her neck and the other pulled her to him.

The kiss held promises of dark desires. It was long and leisurely because he didn't want this night to end. He didn't want to let her go.

She gasped into his mouth, her hand settling on his cock. "Mason."

His name was like honey on her tongue. He nipped at her lips and pulled back, her eyes flashing in the twinkling lights of the party.

He cleared his throat. "About that challenge from earlier..."

She grinned even as her breath stuttered. "You—you're serious?"

He arched a brow. "I wouldn't have said it if I didn't intend to do it. I'm a man of my word, little bird."

Her lips tipped up at the corners as she said coyly, "You're no man. You're the master."
