Lucy pointed a finger at him. Her voice shook. "How dare I? How dare you, you jackass. I never want to see your face again. Find a different city to haunt. Go down south. I'm sure you can score better drugs down there anyway."

The woman wrapped an arm around her shoulders, drawing Lucy back into the group of women. The line for the bathroom had formed into a semi-circle of protection around Lucy as she stood, clenching her fists and staring daggers at the man she called dad.

He eyed the group of women, his eyes burning bright and narrow with rage. "We'll see about that."

He turned and walked out into the crowd still holding his nose. Lucy felt the adrenaline leave her body, and she sobbed. The woman drew her into a hug as she cried.

Somehow, Taylor found her, and the woman switched places with her. "Oh my god, Lucy, did you really punch him?"

Lucy nodded and someone handed her a tissue. She wiped her nose, then Taylor took it and wiped under her eyes with a frown.

"I can't even imagine what you're feeling, Lucy."

Lucy hiccupped. "Mostly pain in my hand. I might have broken my pinky."

Taylor hugged her once more. "Well, come on then. Let's get out of here and go get an x-ray."

Lucy let her usher her from the bar. "We don't need to get an x-ray. It's probably just the shock of it all. It'll be fine tomorrow."

Taylor frowned as the lights of the street passed over her sharp features. "Bullshit. Better safe than sorry. You need your hands for work, Lucy. You have to take care of them."

Lucy groaned as she parked at urgent care.

The doctor came back into the room and put the x-ray onto the light on the wall and pointed.

"Well, the bad news is you definitely broke something. This small bone right here. We call it a boxer fracture. You'll need a splint, but it's a velcro one. So you'll be able to take it off to shower. Just try not to bend your fingers when you take it off. You'll need to wear it for a month and follow up with your primary care physician."

Taylor held her left hand and nodded. Lucy had never seen this serious side of her in all their six years together. She felt like she truly had a sister who cared. Tears pricked her eyes as the doctor shuffled through his papers.

"Now for the good news. You're pregnant."

She squeezed Taylor's hand, and she cried out. Lucy released her with a distracted, "Sorry. What was that?"

The doctor repeated, "You're pregnant. I'd say about three months or so based on the urine test, but that'll be something you want to follow up with your doctor about too."

Lucy frowned, her head swimming. "But I haven't been sick. Not really."

He shrugged. "Some people don't get sick. Some just think they've caught a cold or get a weekend stomach bug or eaten bad food. You need to follow up with your doctor."

Lucy's eyes widened. She had taken a day off in April for a stomach bug that had been going around. But practically everyone in town had had it. She started to breathe faster, thinking back to the trip to Hawaii.

Lucy sat up, her head spinning as she panted. "But the birth control shot. Will that hurt the baby?"

She saw spots on the edge of her vision, and she leaned back on the bed, holding her head. She tried to control her breathing, but her heart was beating too fast. This couldn't be happening. What if she'd somehow hurt her baby?

Oh dear god, she was going to have a baby. She felt like throwing up.

The doctor shrugged. "That's something to follow up—"

"With your doctor. We get it," Taylor said sarcastically.

Lucy looked at her and the room spun. "Taylor, I'm—"

The black spots on the edge of her vision closed in, then everything went black.

It was hours later before the urgent care physician was satisfied that nothing was wrong with her heart to cause the blackout. Taylor drove in the early hours of the night, and Lucy yawned.

"You feeling better?" Taylor asked, soft music playing softly in the background.
