Mason ran a hand through his hair and told his boss every major incident they'd had so far, from the frat party to the CEO and Malia in Hawaii to everything she'd shared about her dad.

Sarmiento nodded and frowned. "You'll need to give a statement then too. But help collect evidence first. It looks like it might rain, and I want this all wrapped up first."

He nodded and got to work with the local police officers who had joined them. Apparently, the trunk was loaded with bricks of coke, Seth's 'usual order' having been filled while he was at dinner.

The driver was babbling about the deliveries and giving up everything in hopes he'd get a smaller sentence. One of Mason's coworkers elbowed him. "Help us load the coke into the truck. This car's been too shot up to drive out of here to evidence, so we'll have to have it towed."

Mason grunted and began carrying bricks from the trunk to the armored car the Marshals kept for just such an occasion. His coworker, Benson, walked with him, carrying bricks too.

"So what's the deal with you and the victim?" he asked.

Mason sighed and growled, "Long story."

"What else do you want to do while we carry this shit? So who is she?"

Mason lifted two more bricks to his shoulders and turned to walk back to the armored car. He frowned. How did he explain Lucy? Who exactly was she other than the woman he loved?

She wasn't his girlfriend or even his ex. They'd pretended to be married for a while, but he couldn't say that. He couldn't tell him that she was his cousin because she was only his cousin by marriage.

He pursed his lips and finally settled for, "I love her but haven't talked to her since I went to training in March. I called her earlier tonight, hoping to hit her up and see if she wanted to go out now that I'm back."

Benson laughed as they stacked their bricks inside. "Damn, I wish you luck, man. If my girl had been caught in something like this, I'd get the hell out of Dodge. Sounds like trouble."

Mason grinned and they went back for the last of the bricks. He didn't care how much trouble it was, Lucy was worth it. If he could only convince her...

He looked around, and Benson nodded to the ambulance. "Go on. I see that look on your face. It looks like the paramedics are done checking her and her friend over."

Mason breathed a sigh of relief as he jogged over to the ambulance.

Chapter 46

When Mason finally rounded the back of the ambulance, he found Lucy sitting inside with a blanket around her shoulders.

Taylor sat beside her, their feet kicking in tandem as they talked in quiet voices. Taylor saw him standing at the back of the ambulance and hopped up. She asked the paramedic, "Are we free to head home? This is too much excitement for one night."

The paramedic nodded, but Benson appeared and said, "Not yet. We need to get both your statements. Novak, do you want to take the injured one's statement? I'll take yours, miss, if you'll come with me? Also, I believe this is your purse and phone from the restaurant?"

Lucy nodded, and Benson put her things in the back of the ambulance. Benson winked at him.

Taylor's eyes narrowed and her hands went to her hips. She opened her mouth to argue with Benson, but Lucy's hand settled on her arm. Taylor looked down. They must've had one of those secret girl talks, because Taylor's shoulders slumped, then she nodded and hopped out of the ambulance.

Mason stepped inside and knelt in front of Lucy, taking her hand. She pulled her hand out of his and tucked it back inside the blanket, looking down and avoiding his gaze.

He hadn't seen her for over five months, and she was gorgeous. When he'd realized it was her, he'd sat frozen to his seat in shock. By the time he'd processed, she was already sitting with her dad. He'd been so helpless, having already set up the microphones behind the picture frame at their booth.

Everyone had been in place from before Seth's arrival. He'd been there less than ten minutes when Lucy arrived, shocking him.

He caressed her cheek and cleared his throat, but Lucy shook her head and pulled back with a frown.

"I can't believe you did this," she said softly, and a tear fell down her cheek.

He frowned. "What? I didn't do anything."

She wrinkled her nose and sniffed. "You used me. I don't know how you convinced him, but I should've suspected something was going on when he called out of the blue."

Mason shook his head. "I had no idea he was going to be here until about six. And I certainly had no idea you were coming too. I only realized he was your father tonight."

She rolled her eyes. "Oh please, you expect me to believe that?"
