He blinked. "Nothing, it's just. Not everyone gives so much detail. This is fantastic. Would you mind going with Simon to the station to record all that info?"

He stood and shuffled to the doorway still holding his back. "Simon? Someone get Simon for me."

"Hey now, you said we could go home. You didn't say anything about going to the station. Am I going to be booked or just give a statement?" Taylor demanded.

A guy who Lucy assumed was Simon stepped into the room and answered her. "Is there a reason to book you?"

Taylor frowned and crossed her arms. "Hell no. I'm not stupid. Those drugs you've been carrying downstairs have nothing to do with Lucy or I. I'm happy to even do a drug test, if it'll make you happy. However, I draw the line at being booked because I've done nothing wrong."

Mason nodded to Taylor. "If you'll let us audio record your statement and give all your contact details, it'll be fine. No need to do a drug test."

Simon arched his brow. "Speak for yourself. That remains to be seen. If you'll follow me, miss, we'll be on our way."

Taylor looked at Lucy and frowned. "What about Lucy?"

Mason glanced at her, and Lucy felt her cheeks heat. "I'll take her home. She'll be fine."

Taylor frowned and opened her mouth to argue, but Lucy stood on shaky legs and nodded. "I'll be in bed before you, chica. Don't worry about me. Just watch your mouth around the cops, ok?"

Mason snorted. "We're not cops. I'm a Texas Ranger, and Simon's FBI. This was a joint raid."

Taylor's jaw dropped, making Lucy smirk. That shut her friend up. She followed Simon out the door, and Mason waved for Lucy to go ahead of him.

"Did you drive?"

She shook her head as she walked down the stairs. "No, we took a ride share." Her legs still felt shaky from all the adrenaline, but when she got to the bottom, Taylor was handing her jacket from the pile still on the dining table.

They hugged and Taylor whispered, "I'll try not to wake you when I come home. But for God's sake, make a move on that eye-candy!"

Lucy chuckled and released her friend. They all walked out the door and to separate vehicles. Mason held the door to his truck open, and she climbed in and buckled up. She pulled on the hem of her dress while he rounded the cab and opened the driver's side.

Her hands grew clammy as he shut the door behind him and started the engine. She wiped them on her dress and gave him directions to her apartment on campus.

"Your roommate seems nice," he said in the darkness as they backed up and got on the highway.

Lucy snorted and stared straight ahead. "Yeah, she's a handful. But we balance each other out really well. I wouldn't have survived all these years of college without her."

"Congratulations on graduation, by the way. I didn't get to tell you earlier."

"Thanks," she said, shifting on the seat.

"Pops invited me to it, but I had to work, as you found out tonight. What were you doing in a place like that, anyway?"

She sighed and leaned her head on the cold glass of the window. "She likes to party. A few times a year, there's a house party like that one. She says it's usually quieter and easier to handle than the packed clubs you have to pay at the door."

Silence fell between them as he pulled in front of her building. He turned the engine off and opened his door.

"Oh, you don't need to come up. This is fine."

He stared at her through the open door and narrowed his eyes. She couldn't see much in the dark street, but the interior light of the truck showed his frown. She wanted to see him laugh and smile like he'd done at the wedding reception.

"I insist. At least let me see you to the door," he said as he shut the door and walked around to the passenger side.

A small thrill went through her at his take-charge manner and the way he was holding the doors for her. She'd never been treated like this before, like a woman who was both wanted and respected.

That's assuming he wanted her. He'd acted like it at the party, but maybe that was just part of his cover with his job.

She led him up the stairs to the apartment and pulled her keys out of her pocket. Her hand was shaking, but she got the door finally opened up.
