His heart stuttered and he looked up at her, his eyes wide and tearing up at the bright sun. He'd lost his glasses somewhere.

She shook her head. "No, I just call her a she. I don't know the sex. Taylor has the envelope and hid it, but no one knows. I—I didn't want to look until I'd told you and—"

He kissed her softly, lazily sweeping his tongue inside. When they finally came up for air, he said, "Thank you. You are the best thing that's ever happened to me, Lucy. Thank you for keeping our baby safe. I promise not to bring work home ever again. Not even a potential WITSEC person like Caroline. It's not safe enough for the baby."

She giggled, and the sound made warmth spread in his chest. She leaned in closer to hover her lips against his. "Oh, now you want to be safe. I see how it is," she giggled again.

He grinned, barely brushing her lips with his. "What? I know how much you love adventure."

She laughed, and everything was right with the world.

Chapter 51

Lucy woke up as the vehicle pulled to a stop. She blinked and looked around. They were back at her house. She rubbed her eyes. "Sorry," she mumbled.

Mason chuckled from the driver's side. "Don't worry. I think you're entitled to a nap every day, right? Isn't that what pregnant women do?"

She yawned and nodded as he opened the door and hopped down. She gathered her bag as he opened her door and offered her a hand. After their fishing trip today, they'd gone back to Helen and Ray's for the fish fry.

Then Mason needed to drive Caroline home where another Marshal was going to take over for his shift overnight. It was dark now. Her stomach grumbled even though they'd called ahead to Caroline's restaurant and ordered to go boxes.

When Lucy had mentioned that she had only had a few bites of the food last night, Caroline had insisted on feeding them.

She'd said, "It's the least I can do, considering the stress I put on you today by introducing myself as his girlfriend. That's not even mentioning the chaos of last night. You might not've been in that situation if it weren't for me running to the Marshals for a way out."

Lucy had smiled and had found Caroline to be as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. She had brought them both up to her apartment, and they'd all eaten dinner together with the other Marshal.

After, Lucy had shyly suggested they just go back to Mason's apartment, but he'd just said, "I want to start as we intend to go on. In our house together. Do you think Ray will sell it to me for a decent price?"

Lucy had texted Taylor an update, and she was sleeping elsewhere tonight, seeing as she'd moved in to help with the pregnancy. Somewhere along the drive back to Crimson Creek, she'd fallen asleep. It was like all the tension between her shoulders from the past few months had suddenly dissipated, leaving her relaxed. Sleep had come easy.

Mason linked their fingers together as they walked to the front door. It reminded her of those long walks on the beach in Hawaii, and she leaned her head on his bicep.

She sighed, happier than she'd ever thought possible. Back in Hawaii, there'd been a cloud in the back of her mind the entire time. It had whispered to her that this wasn't real, it was only temporary.

But now it was gone. He'd mentioned marriage. Maybe theirs would be permanent like her grandparents had been. Theirs had been til death parted them. She'd hope and pray every day for that kind of marriage and try to ignore the example her parents had set.

He unlocked the door and then caught her off-guard when he swept her up in his arms. She squealed and locked her arms around his neck.

"Mason!"

He grinned and stepped through the doorway. "What? I told you I wanted to start as I intend to continue. Isn't it customary to carry a bride over the threshold?"

She laughed as he kicked the door shut behind them. "But we're not married yet."

He grinned and headed straight for the stairs. "In my heart, we already are. How does a shower sound? I think I'd like to wash off the river."

She sighed and leaned her head on his shoulder. "That sounds lovely."

He kicked in the door to her bedroom and walked straight to the bed. Gently, he set her on her feet. She smiled and turned her back to him, putting her hands on the side of the bed.

"Will you undo my zipper?"

He groaned, sliding his hands down her spine to her ass and then back up to find the zipper on the sun dress she'd put on at Helen's before the fish fry. His fingers were electric, sending shock waves through her body.

She was so wet for him already. She pressed her thighs together as fabric rustled behind her. The cool air hit her ass as he flipped her dress up.

He palmed her cheeks and gripped them, making her gasp. "Oh, how I've missed you, little bird. You have no idea."
