I'm so incredibly proud of you, sweet pea.

You've worked non-stop for years to earn that Master's degree.

(heart emoji, heart emoji, heart emoji)

Now time to relax and enjoy a few weeks of rest.

Lucy chuckled as she shuffled forward in line. She hoped to always make her grandmother proud. Heaven knew she'd disappointed her mother. Her grandmother had pulled her out of grief and supported her dream. She fired off a reply.

I'm not sure I remember how to relax.

The new job has taken some getting used to.

But thank you for the graduation present anyway.

I'm going to put it to good use and have fun.

"Excuse me, ma'am?"

Lucy looked up and smiled at the tall, gangly man behind the counter, his staff uniform crisp but slightly wrinkled. He had a frown on his face like he was perpetually worried. She smiled, trying to put him at ease.

"Yes, I'd like to check in please."

"Do you have your ID? I'll get you checked in and hand over your keys. We have golf carts that will take you to your room whenever you're ready."

He wiped the sweat off his forehead, and she opened her big, bulky purse to find her passport. She handed it over and grabbed a map of the resort.

"Oh wonderful. You're in the ocean front bungalows labeled Peacock on the map. I see here your boyfriend already checked in. Here's your key. Please let me know if you have questions."

His voice droned on, but Lucy's brain had sputtered to a stop at the word boyfriend. She had no idea what he was talking about.

She held up a finger and tilted her head. "Pardon me, but did you say boyfriend?"

The man nodded, "Yes, a Mr. Mason Novak. You'll each have your own key, so here's yours. If you'll let me put this sticker on your bag, I'll get that taken to your room."

She shook her hand and swallowed hard. Oh God. Mason was here? How—oh. Nana. Dread filled her body. No, she wouldn't dare. Would she?

She grimaced and took the key. She definitely would. "Thank you very much. How many beds are in the bungalow?"

The man looked at her like she was crazy. "Just the one. Your confirmation from December said only one king bed. You also have the island hopping tour. The concierge's desk is right over there if you have questions about your excursions or planned day trips. He can print out your itinerary."

Lucy felt her cheeks heat as her heart dropped to her stomach and turned to push her bag to the concierge. She absentmindedly had him print her itinerary while she processed what was happening.

Helen had given her the ticket for the resort to Hawaii at graduation in the beginning of December. Did Mason know she was here? Or was he going to be surprised like she was?

She took a deep breath, blowing out slowly through her mouth and reached for the key in his hand. A sense of dread settled in her stomach. She hadn't seen him since that night she'd finally lost her virginity for real.

This could be very awkward. Would he want to sleep with her again? A tiny thrill went up her spine at the idea.

She turned to the line of golf carts and a staff member took her bag while she sat down. After dropping her key and passport back into her bag, she pulled out her phone to see a text from Nana Helen.

I hope you do! (evil face emoji)

The emoji startled Lucy enough that she choked on her laughter. Her grandmother was on the church ladies' auxiliary committee and a woman of God. What in the world did she mean by that emoji?

She opened up the calling app.

"Did you get all checked in?" Helen didn't waste any time with hellos.
