Mason's hand squeezed hers, but he didn't seem to realize he'd tensed at her words. He just nodded curtly as the woman continued.

"Within a few hours of your rescues, we hit a few other targets in the islands—the main warehouse, the laboratory, things like that. It might not be enough to convict the CEO; he might plead plausible deniability. But if you two testify, we can at least implicate more and get all three on kidnapping and attempted murder."

Lucy's head swam, and she felt cold as ice again. "Oh—ok. What about Malia, Lee, and those involved last night?"

The woman nodded. "We got all of them. They'll be in jail for a long time, thanks to you."

She bit her lip. "So I'm safe? There's nothing else on these islands that will try to kill me?"

Mason touched her cheek, and she looked at him. "I'm not letting you out of my sight, so they'd have to go through me first."

The woman cleared her throat awkwardly. "Um, that won't be necessary. We got them all. You're safe. But do think about testifying. You don't have to commit now."

Lucy nodded and breathed a sigh of relief.

Mason asked, "Are you hungry? Let's get you some lunch. They said if you can keep food down, you can be discharged tonight."

The woman smiled and headed for the door, her tablet tucked under her arm. "I'll stop at the nurses station and have them bring a tray. I'll be in touch."

Lucy shifted, the twinge in her arm making her frown. "Mason, how did I get shot?"

He rounded the bed and took the chair again. "When the FBI knocked down the door, you got caught in the crossfire. A bullet grazed you."

Lucy's brows furrowed as she processed his words and tried to remember. Then there was a flurry of activity as lunch was delivered. Mason was sweet, opening her juice and making sure it was all within reach of her right hand.

After she ate, Mason called their grandparents. Lucy winced as Helen had threatened to head to Hawaii to take care of her. Ray had said she was already packed and had a ticket booked on the next flight, but Lucy told them both to stay.

She didn't want more hovering. She just wanted to forget the whole thing and enjoy her vacation. After that, they were discharged from the hospital.

Mason wheeled her out to the street where he'd ordered an Uber.

She frowned at how unsteady she was just standing and moving into the car in her dirty sun dress from yesterday. She laid her head on his shoulder on the ride back to the resort, but neither of them talked. Mason just held her hand and stroked his thumb back and forth.

Mason reached for her elbow to help her walk to the golf carts at the resort. She held back tears. He was being so sweet and taking care of her, but how much of it was him developing feelings for her and how much of it was guilt?

She knew firsthand how guilt could lead to this kind of behavior. Her dad had done it with her mom all the time. She'd witnessed countless times when he'd mess up, then come groveling back and be sweet and thoughtful. It never lasted, though.

They rode back to the room, and she felt bone tired. She just wanted to relax and write her fucking book, maybe have more great sex. Was that too much to ask for a vacation?

She wrapped her arms around herself as they walked from the golf cart to their door. This was why she'd never tried to date before. Stupid shit like this happened. She always stumbled into some kind of trouble. Isn't this why she'd stayed holed up in their apartment for six years of college? As much as Taylor would let her anyway.

Inevitably, Taylor had dragged her out into society several times a year to parties.

Lucy walked into their room and looked around. She was still cold and needed a hot shower. She opened a drawer as Mason shut the door.

"I feel icky. I'm going to shower."

Mason nodded, hovering as if he thought she was going to fall over or something. "Do you want me to draw you a bubble bath in the jacuzzi tub? You're not really supposed to get your shoulder wet until the scrape closes over, which will take a few days."

Lucy felt her frustration mounting, but there was nothing she could do about it. She'd have to adjust her plans for the next few days to stay out of the ocean and waterfalls.

She nodded as she pulled her phone out of her purse—thank God they'd found it in the rescue—and plugged it into the wall.

The water turned on, and Lucy stepped into the bathroom to brush her teeth. Mason slid by her on his way to the bedroom. She finished up, then started to shut the bathroom door as Mason stepped up to it.

She frowned and looked down. "Can you give me a few minutes? I need to be alone."

He frowned but nodded. "Ok, but I'm going to check on you every so often. The drugs might still be in your system, and you seem unsteady on your feet."
