The water shimmered for miles. The wind blew gently of the salty air. She nodded, smelling the coconut scent of him.

Mason pulled out two new bottles from his bag and handed her one. "Have you ever had coconut milk before?"

She shook her head. "Nope, where did you get it?"

"Last night when I talked with the FBI contact. It's pretty good. I figure if we're going to go on all these adventures, we might as well try all the new things. Live in the moment and enjoy it and all that shit."

She chuckled and held her coconut drink up to clink against his. "To enjoying life."

They drank in silence as the sun rose high above them.

"What did the FBI say last night?" she asked softly.

He shoved his hands in his pockets and frowned. "More of what Simon said on the phone. We went over the reports and talked about what I did wrong. Little things that I can do better."

She put a hand on his back and stroked it in comfort. "I'm sorry, Mason."

He shrugged and twisted his lips. "Nothing I can do about it now. I'm thirty-five. I have two more years to prove myself to the FBI before I'll be ineligible due to age."

"Aren't there any other places you can apply to? CIA, Secret Service, that sort of thing?"

He tilted his head and stared at the water, the wind ruffling his hair. "When Amanda and I were fighting about it, I made sure all my applications were up to date. It's a waiting game, and I don't have a lot of time."

He went quiet at the mention of her name, and Lucy felt her stomach twist. To lose someone you loved was so hard, but to lose them in such a tragic way. She wanted to cry for him. She wanted to cry over the fact she was in love with a man who couldn't love her back.

She finished her drink in silence. They stayed up there until they ran out of snacks, talking about her book. Then he started packing up their trash and offered a hand to help her up.

"Ready for the next adventure?"

She arched a brow. "You really want to go to the geyser? I feel like I'm your travel agent, just booking all these things. Is there anything else you'd like to do?"

He shook his head and slung his backpack on with a grin. "Just you, little bird."

She felt heat tinge her cheeks, but she felt a thrill at his words. She smiled, tracing her fingers up his arm. "Anytime you want it, hot shot. But for now, the geyser awaits. You sure it's not too dangerous for little old me?"

She linked their fingers as they walked back down the stairs.

"I'll give you a dangerous geyser when we get back to our room."

She burst out laughing, and he squeezed her hand with a grin.

He winked, his smile mischievous and making her heart skip a beat. "As for our excursion, I love a good adrenaline rush as much as the next guy. And if I'm with you, then I can keep you safe."

She beamed at him, bouncing on her feet as they walked off the mountain. "Got that right. But even if you weren't here, I'm tough, remember? I can handle it."

She felt her legs shake and burn with the effort of their climb, and all the while, her mind swirled with thoughts of her parents.

Chapter 37

Lucy's phone buzzed, and she stopped typing and picked it up. Her brows lifted to see a text from Mason.

I booked you a massage in half an hour.

You can call and reschedule if you're in the middle of a scene.

I also will have dinner ready in our room at seven o'clock sharp.

If you're hungry, that is. If you'd like to join me.
