I wonder how many women have been here before me.

The giddiness evaporates.

Surely, he must think I’m a boring girl compared to all those experienced sexy women.

“Now, what brought on that crease between your brows?” Aidan asks from beside me. His face is flushed and he’s still breathing heavily, sprawled out as if he has no energy left. I forsure don’t.

“Oh, um, nothing.”

“Caitlin, no lying.”

Oh, that drawn-out deep timbre. It’s his ‘daddy’ voice, and I can’t help but do what he says.

“I was just…”

“Just what?” he asks and props his head up in his hand. His brown hair is a mess. I don’t dare to think what state mine is in.

I chew my lip. “Do you find me boring because I’m inexperienced?”

I didn’t expect him to throw his head back laughing. The creases in the corner of his eyes bleed into the couple of grey strands of hair at his temples.

“Ah, sweet Caitlin. There’s nothing boring about you. Not one iota. I love teaching you, love seeing how you respond to new things, love witnessing firsthand how your sexuality is bursting through every inch of your body.”

Love. The Irish call each other ‘love’all the time. Aidan has called me ‘love’ before, but I knew it was only an expression, same as when Mum or the shop assistant call me ‘love’. But now Aidan says helovesbeing with me. That means something, right? That means somethingmore.Butterflies erupt in my tummy and my heart kicks up speed as he leans over and kisses my damp forehead, his warm breath caressing my skin.

“I’ve got more to teach you, my sweet fairy. But first I need to feed you something with more substance than my cum.”

“Aidan!”

He just laughs and pulls my exhaustedbody off the bed.

“A lot of these houses are haunted.”

The glass of wine stops halfway up to my mouth as I turn to Aidan with wide eyes.

“You’re messing with me again.”

I’m on his sofa, feet tucked underneath me, and the remnants of our dinner – tapas style dishes – still on the coffee table. I had offered to clear it, but he pulled me back and told me to relax. He’s in a pair of boxer shorts, leaving those long, strong legs on display, while I’m in another of his shirts, a pinstriped one he selected for me. That’s all I’m wearing. He didn’t allow me to put on underwear. It feels so decadent.

“No, it’s true. It all stems back to the Battle of Clontarf. This, right here, is the battlefield. Thousands of men were killed in the battle that ended the Viking stronghold on Ireland. So right underneath this house are the graves of many, many Viking men.”

Goosebumps appear on my arms and I glance over my shoulder.

“Have you ever… seen any in this house?”

His pause is too long. “I—haven’t no. The old couple next door claims to have a few living with them.”

A squeaky noise makes its way up my throat. “Um, let’s talk about something else.”

“Okay,” Aidan says, a devious glint in his eyes. “Have you ever watched porn?”

“What?” Ghosts may be a safer topic of conversation. “Of course not!”

“You can’t be an adult and not have watched a bit of action, Caitlin. It’s part of coming of age.”

I snort. “I doubt Mum would agree with that.”
