“Las Vegas. It’s a required thing, and I’m probably going to have to find a new job after this anyway.”

My dad leaned over to give me a hug. “Why? You okay, honey?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. Remember how I told you about the boys’ club? I just think it’s probably best for me to move on.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

I shook my head. “I really just wanted to catch you before the trip to say goodbye. I’ll be back in a couple of days, though. Nancy is watching your great-grandfish.”

“I expect to hear all about that.”

I laughed. “I’m sure you will. I just hope it isn’t too much responsibility for her.”

“Well, they’re just—”

“If you say, ‘They’re just fish,’ I’m going to smack you,” I warned.

He held up his hands, laughing. “Okay,” he relented. “Tell me about your trip. Where in Vegas are you staying?”

I gave him the details, explained the convention, and told him where I’d be staying.

“Have you ever been to Vegas, Mags?” Dad asked her.

“Nope,” she said. “Sounds like a pretty interesting place, though.”

They stared into each other’s eyes, and I started to feel like I was interrupting something.

“Um, I was just stopping by before I leave, but I’m going to take the hint now, and I’ll come by when I get back, okay?” I told them.

Dad looked up at me. “No, it’s okay, stay.”

I snorted at him. “Y’all are having a moment, and I don’t want to intrude.”

“Really,” Margaret said warmly, “we most certainly are not.”

Dad winked at her, then turned to me. “How’s that young man you brought by a while back?”

“Um, I assume he’s fine?” I said, keeping my tone light. I wasn’t in the mood to talk about it.

“I’m sorry I missed meeting him,” Margaret added. “Your dad told me all about him.”

“He said he was taking you to the aquarium! I told him that was the way to your heart, for sure. So did it work? Did he worm his way in there?” Dad asked.

“To the aquarium? Yes. He wormed his way right in through the door.”

“You know what I meant, Indi—”

I quickly stood and put my hands up. “I know, but I’m not up to talking about that right now. Sorry. You two have fun. I’ll see you later.” I leaned down and kissed Dad on the top of his head. “Love you.”

“Love you, too,” he said. “Didn’t mean to offend.”

“It’s okay.” I leaned over and gave Margaret a hug, too. “I’ll call when I’m back.”

“Does what happens in Vegas really stay in Vegas?” Dad asked suddenly.

“No,” I answered. “Liminal spaces aren’t really a thing.”

“Excellent,” he answered happily.
