“Do you want to keep getting it?”

“No.”

“It takes some women a year to get their periods back, so it’s nothing you need to worry about. Just focus on healing, Alina, inside and out. You need to talk to someone about what you’ve been through.”

“I’m going to. Matvey’s going to help me find someone.”

“Good. You can’t go through this alone, and you can’t expect everything to return back to normal just because you’re no longer being held by this man.” He looks at Emily and then motions towards the shut door. “I’m glad you have the support of your family, but often that’s not enough. A professional will be able to help you in ways that they can’t.”

“I know. I’m going to speak to someone,” I assure him.

Before he lets me go, he feels my ribs and listens to my lungs and heart, making sure everything seems fine since I mentioned the cracked ribs. When he’s satisfied they’ve healed properly, he starts to gather everything together while I slip my jeans back on and stand up. Emily waits for me, silently supporting me like she has been throughout the entire exam. I slip my sneakers on and am about to leave when Dr. Bianchi surprises me by saying, “Working for the Alessi family has never bothered me, and it’s moments like this that remind me I made the right choice with them. The man who hurt you needs to suffer for what he’s done.” He points a finger at the door. “And those men out there will make damn sure he does. A prison cell is too good for a bastard like Konstantin.” He zips up his bag and gives my shoulder a soft pat when he walks by. “Isabella was such a sweet girl, and she didn’t deserve what happened to her, and neither did you, Alina.”

“Thank you, Dr. Bianchi, for everything.”

He slips me a card with his number written on the back. “Call me if you ever need anything.”

When he opens the door, the first thing I see is Matvey leaning against the opposite wall. His broad shoulders fill the space, and when he lifts his head, his dark eyes immediately find mine. I see the tension leave him when he sees that I’m okay. He looks me over, convincinghimself that I’m fine before he closes the distance, pulling me back into his arms as he kisses my head.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” I squeeze him back, taking the comfort he so freely gives.

“I’ll be in touch about the results,” Dr. Bianchi says before walking away with Dominic.

We go back into the room with Roman and visit with him for a while until it’s obvious he’s trying like hell to stay awake.

“I’ll be home soon,” he promises when I lean down and give him another hug. “I love you, sis.”

“I love you, too,” I tell him, kissing his cheek. “Get some rest, and we’ll see you soon.”

Matvey pats his leg while I hug Emily goodbye and thank her again for staying with me. By the time we leave the room, she’s already cuddled back up against Roman, and I know they’ll both be asleep in minutes. She may not be on painkillers like he is, but the pregnancy and worrying about him has taken its toll.

Taking Matvey’s hand, I hold it as we walk back downstairs. Dominic hears us and comes walking over.

“You’re welcome to stay for lunch.”

Matvey looks down at me, willing to do whatever I want. “Thanks, but I think I’d rather just go back.”

“Of course,” Dominic says, giving me a smile. “You’re welcome here anytime.” He turns his attention to Matvey. “I’ll let you know if I hear anything new, but Roman should be able to leave tomorrow. I’ll have a car bring him home.”

“Thanks, Dominic.” Matvey reaches out to shake his hand. “We owe you yet again.”

“You don’t owe me shit. Just get me the name I want and we’re even.”

“You’ll have it,” Matvey assures him. “Danil never fails.”

He’s right. Danil is like a fucking bloodhound. Once he catches a scent, he won’t stop until he finds exactly whereit leads.

Looking up at Dominic, I’m not sure I’m doing the right thing when I ask, “Do you have a picture of your sister I can see?”

His dark eyes study me for a second before he reaches into his suit jacket and pulls out his phone. Without a word, he pulls up a photo and holds it out to me. I stare at the woman with the long, dark hair and the huge grin on her face, unsure if what I’m about to say is going to hurt or help Dominic, but I can’t lie to him. He deserves more than that after everything he’s done for us.

“I saw her.”

“What?” He tenses at the news, every part of him on high alert as he looks down at me. “Where? When?”

Matvey’s arm tightens around me at Dominic’s tone, but I know he’s not angry at me, and I know I’m not in any danger. I recognize the fury inside him because I’m consumed with it myself. We all are. People were taken from us, lives were stolen, and in Dominic’s case, there’s no getting his sister back. The only happy ending he’s getting is when he sinks his blade into the fucker who killed her.
