Konstantin tries to laugh, but all he can manage is a wet cough that makes him wince. “You’ll never be able to stop what I’ve put in place. Others will just take over. You haven’t stopped shit. You’ve just delayed it a tiny bit, so fucking congratulations for putting a slight delay on the world’s biggest business.”

“You’re right,” I tell him. “We haven’t stopped sex trafficking, but that was never our goal. Like you said, it’s impossible. There will always be rich assholes who want to buy women, and nothing is going to stop that, but all we wanted was to find Alina and to take down the Bratva responsible for her disappearance, and we’ve done that.”

“We have,” Danil agrees, walking over to stand beside me, “and as luck would have it, we’re going to take down a lot of other fuckers along with you. Casimir’s been very helpful these last few days.”

Konstantin’s eye darts to Danil, surprise widening it enough to let me know he wasn’t expecting this turn of events.

Danil gives a soft laugh. “We’re running everything as if you were still in charge. The auction is still on track, and we’ve spread the word that we’ll be rebuilding the Red Viper. We’re not, of course, but they’ll all be dead before they can figure that out, because Casimir was also kind enough to hack me into your elaborate system. We have the names of everyone who’s ever bought a woman from you, and I gotta say, I was surprised to see so many prominent men listed. We also have the name and location of every club you use to find and hold victims.”

“I think soon there are going to be a lot of explosions all over Europe,” Vitaly says with a smile. “Your name is going to be remembered, but not how you wanted it to be. You’re going to be the sad fuckpeople mention when they want a laugh or when they want to feel better about their own pathetic lives. A low-level enforcer who isn’t climbing the ranks as fast as he’d like can at least make himself feel better because, hey, at least he’s not like Konstantin Lebedev who died like a little bitch in his own garage.”

“Our mistake,” I say with a grin. “I guess your legacy will live on.”

“I’m your brother-in-law,” Konstantin reminds Vitaly, but if he’s expecting that to inspire some sort of familial bond, he’s in for a disappointment.

“No,” Vitaly tells him, “you’re nothing to me. You treated my wife like shit her entire life. You traumatized her and made her live in fear of you. She’s mine now, and when our baby is born, they’ll be a Melnikov, just like Katya is, and the only uncles they will ever know are my brothers. They will never know about you.”

“Come on, let’s get the fuck out of here,” Lev says, waving a hand at Timofey. “Call us if anything changes and keep an eye on their cuts.”

Timofey nods and says, “I’ll keep a close eye on them.”

“Your wife has the weekend off,” Vitaly tells him. “Invite her over and spend a few days enjoying the heated, indoor pool. Just, you know, don’t let her visit the garage.”

Timofey looks over at us. “That’s not a bad idea. This place is fucking huge, and she could use a break. I bet we won’t even be able to hear these bastards scream from the third floor.”

“Just make sure whoever you get to replace you knows what I expect,” I tell him.

“Of course.”

He pulls out his phone, already texting Mila to let her know. I’m not worried about Timofey failing to do his job. He’s one of our top men, and if he says it’ll be done, then it’ll be done. I pull my own phone out and send a text to Alina.

Everything okay, baby?

When I don’t immediately get an answer, I try not to panic. When she doesn’t answer the next text I send, my heart rate starts to speed up. I know it’s irrational to panic about a text that isn’t quickly answered. There could be several reasons why she’s not answering, but the rational part of my brain doesn’t ever seem to work where Alina is concerned, so I quickly send a text to Roman.

Is Alina okay? She’s not answering my texts.

I let out the breath I’ve been holding when I see him typing out a response.

She’s fine, brother, just fell asleep during the movie. I can’t say I blame her. It was so fucking boring.

He sends me a photo of her beautiful, sleeping face, and the sight of her instantly calms me.

Thanks for letting me know. I’m leaving now.

Drive fast. I think Simona is already picking out the next musical. Save me, brother.

I laugh while I promise him I’ll speed the whole way back. I look over at Danil. “Roman needs rescuing. They’re making him watch musicals, and your wife is about to pick another.”

Danil smiles. “That’s my girl. I think we should all drive really slow.”

“That’s cruel, man,” Lev tells him.

“They need to get the shitty movies out of their system while we aren’t there,” Vitaly says. “Better one of us gets stuck watching them than all of us.”

“That’s true. I’ve changed my mind. We should all drive well below the speed limit,” Lev says.

I laugh. “Go for it, but I’m speeding back. Alina fell asleep, and I don’t want her to wake up before I get back, even if that means I get stuck watching a goddamn musical.”
