“Jesus fucking Christ, Axewell! Get a grip!” she yells through the door, only for it to come crashing and cracking inward.

A very angry Axe stands in the doorway. Eyes fully black, burning with rage.

And the strangest little zing zips across my nethers.

Stevie’s nose twitches.

“If you ever, and I mean ever, blink her away like that again...”

“Care to finish that statement? Because I’m pretty sure Dove came here of her own free will, unlike the hostage situation you have going on.”

Axe pins me with a stare, dark flames burning in his eyes. “Get out here. Now, Dove!”

Flames.In his eyes.

Maybe Stevie’s right. Maybe I can’t see how similar these heirs are to Malachi. Maybe I don’t want to.

But I know when I look in Axe’s eyes, the flames within aren’t anger directed at me.

It’s for me. On my behalf.

And that’s all the difference.

“He can’t come in, Dove,” Stevie muses. “I made sure of it. If you want to go back with him, you’ll have to actively choose it.”

I stare at her, unsure how much she’s pretending. She knows I have to go back to get Gael.

Thank you, I mouth to her before standing.

I don’t look back as I cross the ward. The moment I’m clear, Axe wraps me in his arms and blinks us to the lair.

“Hells, Dove! I nearly burned the Lust House building down to get to you. You?—”

I’m still wrapped in his arms, pressed against his hard chest.

Celestus help me, he smells so good. It’s not so much the way he smells, which is warm and mellow, with a hint of brimstone. It’s what Axe’s combination of scents does to my brain.

To me.

I’m limp in his arms, relaxed, comfortable, his familiar scent evoking a deep sense of satiety. Filling spaces in me I wasn’t aware were empty.

“Fuck, you truly do feel like heaven, Dove,” he murmurs against the top of my head, completely blissed out.

We stay like that for so long and not long enough. When Axe pulls away, it’s begrudgingly.

He tucks a finger under my chin and lifts my head. I meet his gaze and I’m taken aback by how…

“I was so worried. You-you can’t just go off like that. Not when we’re…” He trails off, free hand dragging down the side of my face. “If something had happened to you…”

He doesn’t finish the thought.

The silvery ring of his pupil blows out wide with his next words. “I’m going to kiss you, Dove. If that’s not OK, you need to leave right now.”

It’s only now that I realize where Axe blinked us.

We’re in his room.

My heart ticks up, and my mouth floods with saliva at the thought of his lips on mine.
