Stevie pitches forward. “Wait, did you mean to say that?”

I shake my head, keeping a lock-jawed grip on my tongue.

“Then we didn’t hear a thing.”

Ms. Greenly looks at me, then Stevie several times. “I’m not a snitch.”

“You don’t understand. You can’t tell anyone what you know. If anyone finds out…”

“I told you, I ain’t no snitch, Dove. Stevie?”

“Yeah, me either. Don’t worry about us. We didn’t hear nothing, didn’t see nothing.”

The lead weight I’d worn around my neck since arriving here loosens. “Well, now that you know, now you know what I mean when I say I’m not a demoness. According to you, I shouldn’t be able to haveustrues.”

“We’re all made of the same stuff. Some of us are more closely linked than others,” Ms. Greenly says.

I suppose.

“We’re here if you need us. But, I guess... just try to enjoy yourself?”

Yeah, that’s the only thing I’ve been doing, really.

“Well, if there’s nothing else, I have to help the Lords batten down the hatches on the wards.”

“Sorry about that. My father doesn’t like that I’m here.”

“We figured. But you found your mates. Everyone deserves that.”

I wish they would stop saying things like that.

These heirs aren’t my mates. They’re just helping me get through theustrues. It’s biology.

That’s all.

Stevie and Ms. Greenly stand, and Chonk hops off my lap to stand in front of them.

“Oh, by the way,” Stevie says, just before the demon cat portals them away. “There’s a new employee at the Burrow. He replaced the guy that started the flood and said to say hi to you. Knew your name and everything. Actually, now that I think about it, he might be related to you. He has the same violet eyes.”

My blood turns to ice, freezing in my veins. “What did you say?"

Stevie nods, a bright smile on her face. “Yeah. He said to tell you that Malachi says hi. Total cult name if I ever heard one.”

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Likewise, it is not the touch of a demon that brings about the Fall.

They disappearin a flash of tentacles, and I stumble out of the solarium.

“Axe! Bastian!” I yell, hand over my heart, as if keeping it there might keep my chest from caving in with dread or my worst fears from truly being manifest.

How is he here?

The Lords and headmaster are keeping Blackwood safe. That’s what they said. How could Malachi be here?

Immediately their heads poke out of their doors.
