“Olivia, seats are first come first serve in my classroom. You know that. Please find another seat so I can begin.”

And the first words out of Mr. Shaw’s mouth are to defend me. I might not mind his class.

I go back to the slides on my tablet and scroll all the way to the last page. Dated today. Excellent, that means I can take the class period to review what I missed and be all caught up for the next period. And since this isn’t a topic I’ve already learned, I appreciate the forethought.

As with all history, the narrative favors the people telling it. In this case, witches and demons.

Wolves and other shifters are but an afterthought, and on a cursory scan, I haven’t seen the fae mentioned once.

Though, I’ll give the author credit. They didn’t shy away from the brutal and elitist genesis of Blackwood U. I summarize what I’ve read in my head to solidify it.

A generation ago, witches could only practice one of the twelve bloodline magics.

I highlight all twelve in case it’s on a test.

Celestial, earth, air, fire, water, metal, summer, winter, autumn, spring, infernal or demonic, and blood.

Then I organize them in groups in my brain for easy recall. Seasons, elements plus metal, and the weirdos, celestial, infernal, and blood.

To my knowledge, the angels of Celestus have no magical interaction with witches on this plane.

The name must purely be happenstance.

The witches were bound to practice by these bloodlines and did everything to ensure the bloodline magic stayed pure. Namely, they only allowed pureblood witches into their covens.

Anyone who’s read any amount of history knows that’s never good, but for the same reason as any ancient aristocracy with similar practice, the witches didn’t care.

They stuck with their ways, forcing witches to breed with as many mages as possible until they conceived full-blooded witches.

No one thought about the potential risk of inbreeding.

Purity was their highest duty.

It took a single witch leaving and coming to Blackwood to turn the tides. A witch by the name of…

Jade Greenly?

My first period Practical Magic teacher?

Changed an entire culture.

A notification flashes on my screen.

Olivia Tate

You think you’re the new shiny toy in the school? Just wait until the novelty wears off and you’re just another demon bitch they throw away.

I stare at the message for several moments, trying to figure out what to say when I spy a little square next to Olivia’s name. Curious, I tap it, and her name and profile picture go gray. The message disappears as well, replaced with a single line of text.

YOU’VE BLOCKED OLIVIA TATE. TO UNDO PROCEED TO SETTINGS.

Stevie leans close, peering at my screen. “Did you just… you did.”

“I didn’t mean to. But now that I have, I’m not in a big hurry to fix it.”

“She’s gonna be pissed.”

“That’s her problem.”
