Yes, it absolutely feels as good the second time.

“A demoness, true and deserving of the mantle, doesn’t have to pretend. She doesn’t need to act cocky. She simply embodies confidence.”

No one, not my father or Sera, not any of my tutors, not even my dear mother, would ever use that word to describe me. Not today. Not ever.

And yet…

The compliment doesn’t feel bad. It blooms in me, spreading its warmth all the way to my tingling fingertips.

Too bad I’m not actually a demoness.

“Anyway, I decided to skip my test and come find you.” His thumb strokes the back of my hand, and I can’t bring myself to pull away.

“And why is that?”

“You practically begged me to join you here.”

“Hardly. It was a command. You’d know the difference if you’d ever given a command before.”

Celestus help me, why am I acting like this? I can’t even blame my brain for that one. I need him on my side. And now that I know how they’re all taking it…

I need to get my mouth under control.

Axe just smiles and moves on. “Well, Ms. Greenly told me to make sure you got caught up. And now that I know you can’t read demon script, we’ve got a lot to catch up on.”

“I don’t really need to learn that. I’m not actually a demon.”

It’s out before I can stop it. Axe’s strange and soothing presence, plus his gentle touch, have loosened the hold I have on my tongue.

My heart races, but my mind works faster. “I mean, I was raised in such a weird plane that I don’t consider myself a true demon. Besides, once I’ve graduated, I’ll probably have to go back to my plane and never use it again.”

I see nothing in his gaze to indicate he thinks I’m lying.

“Come now, angelface. We both know that’s not the reason.”

His words hit me like an ice bath, like a monsoon. Like the full power of the Flames of Celestus.

I pull my hand out of his. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Lying while I stare him right in the eye.

Malachi always said I was a terrible liar. But I’m starting to think Malachi told me a lot of things about myself that were merely his interpretations.

Axe leans close, his delicious scent wrapping around me, making me dizzy.

“I see how your body reacts to me, Dove.” His voice is soft and low, like we’re tangled in sheets and sharing pillow talk.

Axe drags a finger down my cheek, and I can’t help the rushed inhale or the heat between my thighs.

“I see how your pupils dilate around me. How your heart races when I’m near. And I can scent how much you want me.”

I pull away, disgusted by his remark.

Disgusted, and turned on.

Axe grabs my chin and pulls me back. “I see it all, and I know you’re only trying to give the other heirs a fair shot. Spending too much time with me gives me an unfair advantage, especially considering how much you’re already drawn to me.”

He’s so close I can count the diamond dust strewn across the dark sky of his eyes.

He pulls me in, so his lips brush my ear. “And I’m willing to give them a fair shot at you.”
