“It’s cozy,” Sawyer said happily, snuggling into her, instantly dispelling any clouds that had come over Josie’s mood.

“It’s old,” she insisted firmly.

“It has character,” he retorted.

“It has cracks in the walls.”

“It’s still standing.”

“There’s mold in the winter.”

That finally gave him pause. “Is it black mold?” he asked.

“No.”

“Then it’s fine. You pick up after horses all day forfun. What’s a bit of mold?”

“Who wants a bit of mold? Even a bit of it?”

“Are you going to give me a tour or not?” he asked.

Josie spread her arms out. “A tour? Of this whole place? I don’t know if there are enough hours in the day, Sawyer.”

He sighed and shook his head dramatically. “I guess we’ll just have to try and squeeze it in, ya know.”

Josie grinned and stood up, once again spreading her arms wide, this time with more of a showman’s energy.

“Well, this is my kitchen.”

“Lovely. The stove did give it away a little bit,” Sawyer said, standing up to join her on the tour.”

“And it’s a great stove. Just because you set the dial to three hundred and fifty degrees doesn’t mean it will actually be that hot. Might be more, might be less. It’s always a fun surprise.”

“Keeps you on your toes,” Sawyer said appreciatively, playing along and not bothering to hide his grin.

“If you come an extra foot in this direction,” Josie said, sliding just a few inches over to the sink. “You’ll notice the cracked tiles at the back of the sink.”

“Rustic.”

“That’s one word for it.”

“I’m sure there are plenty more words for them, but let’s stick with rustic.”

“I was saying plenty of words that I won’t repeat when I was sticking them back onto the backsplash with contact cement because they just kept falling off.”

Sawyer was laughing now, thoroughly enjoying himself. Josie was flushing from the thrill of being able to entertain him so much that he found her funny, that he really didlikeher and her odd little ramblings. So she continued, encouraged by his reactions.

“That corner up there,” she said, pointing to the ceiling. “That’s where the mold comes back every winter.”

“A real centerpiece of the kitchen, then.”

“Oh, it’s great. A beautiful green hue. Very fashionable.”

“So far it seems like there are just too many good features to keep track of.”

“Well, since you mentioned it, the kitchen is also the living room,” she said. “As you might be able to tell from not my second-hand, but mythird-hand couch.”

“Resourceful. Eco-friendly, I like.”
