“I was kidding.”

He juggled her up closer to his chest. A flash of metal winked from her toes as she settled against him. “You’re gold from head to toe.”

She wiggled her toes. “I design jewelry. I guess I had to, I love wearing it so much.”

“Is that right?”

She nodded. “Family business. Warren Jewelers in Kensington Square.”

He’d never really cared about the things that women fussed over, but he appreciated their softness and their character. Especially this woman. It certainly explained the interesting way she put herself together. Like she dressed to show off the simple gold warmth.

Once on the porch, he stopped next to the table. That snack was a loss, but he didn’t want a flock of birds pecking his furniture. “Grab that?”

She wrinkled her nose but took the plate.

Inside, he set her on the kitchen island. He stroked down her smooth thighs and leaned in for a kiss. “I think we forgot a few things.” He took the plate from her and tossed the contents into the trash. “Wine glasses.”

“My clothes.”

He laughed, held up a finger. “Wait right there.” He ran back outside and collected her clothes, the condom, as well as the wine and their glasses. He got rid of the condom in the small garbage outside, locked the door behind him, and dumped the rest on the island. He moved back in front of her and slipped his hands under his shirt, flicking her bra open.

“Hey, now.”

He made a gimme gesture with his fingers and she rolled her eyes. A second later the lacy pink bra came out his sleeve. “I love that girls can do that.” He took everything into the mudroom and tossed them into the wash on gentle.

“Did you just put my clothes in the washer?”

“I can do laundry.”

“Don’t sound so indignant,” she said with a laugh. “Did you?—”

“Gentle cycle, Goldie.”

“You’re a good man.”

“I try.” He returned to the fridge and took out the other wedge of brie he had, a bunch of grapes, and the box of crackers. He set them all in a bowl in her lap.

“I approve.” She shrugged. “I’ll forgive the execution.”

He emptied the wine into both glasses and handed them to her. “Here we go. Don’t spill.”

She let out a delighted squeak as he scooped her up again and climbed the stairs slowly as to not spill their wine. When he got to his loft bedroom that looked over the downstairs, she made a happy little sigh. “That’s some house you’ve got there.”

“I like it. But it’s still the view that I love.” He turned with her to the wall of windows that looked out on the lake.

“Holy cow.”

“Worth the crazy price tag every day.” He nosed away a curl from her face and nipped at her ear. “Now how’s my presentation?”

“Off the charts.” She leaned over to his tallboy dresser and set their glasses down and then the bowl. There was enough light from downstairs to see her, but the room was dim enough that the moonlight gave it a silvery cast.

He let her slide down to stand, took the glasses down from their perch, and led her to the windows. She leaned her forehead on the glass with a sigh. “I always wanted someplace on the water. It was the best part of traveling for work. I never got to stay in a place like this though.”

Breakers foamed over the rocky coast below them and the lapping sounds penetrated the night. He’d tinted the windows against prying eyes, but soundproofing was out of the question. That was the only reason he was able to sleep most nights.

He slid his arm around her waist, dragging her back against him. He took a sip of his wine and kissed the skin behind her ear, content to just hold her now that his body was sated.

At least for now.
