“Van, I missed you at the game yesterday. Jed told me you vacated with some hot blond. Actually, he said you stole some hot blond from a guy in the stands.”

Vance leaned back in his chair. “I didn’t steal her—exactly.”

“Oh, really?”

“More like I dared her to make a different choice.”

“You are something else.”

“Have you heard of Warren Jewelers?”

“Not off the top of my head. Why?” Her rich voice rolled through the phone. Peyton was a famous singer and had fallen hard for his buddy Jed.

“No reason.”

“Uh oh. Did you find your next project?”

He cleared his throat. “No. Well, maybe. I’m not sure. The girl I met?—”

“Oh, Van. Don’t get wrapped up in the new girl with business stuff. That never ends well.”

“Her name is Presley Warren.”

“Wait—Presley Warren I’ve heard of. That’s the girl you met?”

“Yeah. I like her. A lot.”

“Jed actually had something custom made for me from her.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, my necklace.”

He remembered the dainty cuffs necklace she never took off. Somehow, he was pretty sure that had a bit more a deeper meaning, but that wasn’t any of his business. “I don’t know much about jewelry, but the stuff I found on the web looks pretty amazing.”

“Yes. I actually was thinking about contacting her to do another piece.”

“I’m getting the idea that she’s not doing much of her own work these days.”

“That’s a shame. Now that you’ve put her in my head, I hate you.”

Vance pinched the bridge of his nose. “Think how I feel, then multiply it by eleven.”

“Oh, how the mighty have fallen.”

“Shut up.”

“I knew there was a special girl out there for you. You even have the perfect story for the wedding toast. You stole the girl at a football game.”

“More like an interception. The guy she was with was a real douchebag. She was already contemplating his demise before halftime.”

Peyton’s husky laugh rolled over the phone line. “I’m glad you found someone who isn’t a gold-digging bitch. Well, I’m assuming she’s not. Otherwise, I’ll take care of her.”

“Throttle back, mama-bear.”

She sighed. “I’m tired of you hooking up with the wrong girls. I’m crossing my fingers that Presley is the one.”

“Let me actually go on a date with her first. We sort of skipped that part.”
