He groaned. “It’s the most boring sport on the planet. Give me football or basketball any day.”

“I was a cheerleader for all of two months in high school.”

He shifted in his seat. “I don’t think it’s fair to put ideas of you in a cheerleading uniform in my poor brain.”

“Perv.”

He nodded. “Yeah. That’s hot.”

They pulled up to the bleached white front of the resort. Everything was dark rattan and teal over white. He could smell the water the moment they pulled up. Even the air was different. Presley’s hair had gotten curlier with the humidity.

“We’re staying here?”

“Yeah. In the back. There are private villas.”

“Oh, of course there are.”

“Private beach and a pool.”

“Private?” Her interest edged into the question.

“Yes. Private.”

Ted pulled around to their villa on the edge of the property. He wanted it as isolated and solitary as possible.

She climbed out and whirled around to him. “No way.”

“This is the smaller villa actually. We don’t have any visitors. Figured I’d leave the really big ones to the families.”

She ran up the grass incline to the house, leaving her gold flip-flops at the bottom of the hill.

“Thanks, Ted. We’re good for tonight. She’ll need to go into town early tomorrow.”

“I’ll be here at seven.”

“Perfect.” He slid out and grabbed their bag, scooping up her shoes as he climbed after her.

She ran across the property, dipped her toe into the infinity pool then took off for the beach. Vance stowed their food in the fridge and followed her down to the water’s edge.

The beach was powder white and the water was turquoise glass in its calmness. The tide was out so the waves were more like lapping fingers than the pounding cliff breakers surfers loved.

He kicked off his deck shoes and met her at the foamy line of waves.

“I’ve only ever seen this kind of view in a magazine or on television.”

“You look good in it.”

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For what?” She rolled her eyes. “You’re way too generous.”

“I think I like spoiling you.”

She drew him deeper into the waves until the warm water fuzzed around their ankles. Night was closing in on the coastline and a hazy red banded across the horizon line to meet up with the navy star studded sky.

Eventually they wandered back up to the villa where she lured him into curling up on the queen-sized lounger next to a fire pit. The fire left her in a soft glow of gold. They both fell asleep with the warm night blanketing them.
