“You mentioned earlier how you have a sister. Any other siblings?”

He stops fidgeting but doesn’t look in my direction.

“My sister died of cancer. No other siblings.”

Well, fuck.

I stare at the side of his face.

He lost a sibling.

Time and space are taffy. I’ve got no idea what to say or do or how to react. I’ve nuked the atmosphere, and it will never revive. “Sorry,” I whisper.

“Komal, let’s just get back to the hostel.”

I get his message, loud and clear.

There’s more silence until he breaks it. “Tonight, I’m the one who is sorry.” His voice is barely there. “It wasn’t my intention to make you uncomfortable. And if you wish—if you need—I can request another agent to replace me. If that’s what you want?”

Doeshewant that? He’s forcing words out. Either way, it’s my fault too. I pushed, even though he warned me to stop. Then I brought up a dead sister.

“We’re okay,” I squeak out. “Stay.”

Really, the thought of another bodyguard replacing him makes me want to scream.

We don’t talk for the rest of the ride, but when we reach the hostel, Huan insists on giving me his room. He doesn't move an inch until I surrender. My feet drag to his private shower, and under the steaming water, all I can think of is Huan. How bad it must have been for him. How it must affect him. How he never shows grief.

When I get out of the shower, I see my luggage is on the bed. Huan brought it in and left.

Why are you so good at caring?I think helplessly. And who cares for you?

When my body hits the bed, I can’t keep my eyes open. My last thought is about Huan again. I wonder where he sleeps.

“Wardrobe needs to test your lighting and makeup,” Mom says. “You’ll have to be home a little earlier than planned. Two weeks in London should be enough, right?”

One week cut from the trip just like that.

My fingers tighten on the phone. “I can’t say no, can I?”

“It wouldn’t be a good first impression.”

Right. No choice. “… I’ll have to make it work, and somehow still get everything in London done that I want.”
