Chapter Ten

Luna’s command had caught him off guard. All the color had leached from her face, and she held her hand, as if in pain.

“Not liking the silence,” the woman snapped. “I’m gone.”

“Wait. I apologize.” No need to antagonize the mage. “Miguel gave me your number. Said you might be able to help me.”

“That is a common name and tells me nothing.”

The caution was not unexpected. “He told me to mention La Falda, Argentina. Said you’d understand.”

She made a slight humming sound. “You must be special for him to put you in contact with me. Or you’re his worst enemy and he’s hoping I’ll take care of you for him.”

The voice sounded youthful, but that meant nothing. The woman could be anywhere from twenty to one hundred twenty. Older if she was a dark mage.

“Who are you?”

“It’s best if we both remain anonymous.” And names were powerful. No sense in giving her information she might later leverage against them.

“Doesn’t work that way. You want my help, my rules.”

Luna’s lips were pinched, but she gave a curt nod. Whatever was going on was linked to Solange’s magic. This might be their one shot of getting rid of it. He briefly considered giving one of his aliases but opted for the truth. There was too much on the line to risk alienating the woman.

“Kade. My name is Kade Alvarez.”

“Well, well. The gray wolf. To what do I owe the honor?”

His hand clenched around the phone, the urge to hang up strong. When Luna made a sound of distress, he sat down beside her and wrapped his free arm around her. Her entire body was vibrating. Not trembling. It was as if there was electricity running through her. Sweat beaded on her forehead. Heat radiated from her skin. She was burning up.

Contacting another mage had triggered some sort of offensive response in whatever spell Solange had cast.

“You’re not alone.” It wasn’t a question.

“No. I’m here with a human. A mage put some sort of spell on her.”

Sultry laughter came over the line. “What did she do to piss off a mage? And why do you care?”

He reeled back his temper. Getting mad wouldn’t help. As strong as he was, as much power as he had, he was helpless when it came to magic. If he had to humble himself to help Luna, so be it.

“Luna caught my attention and tried to protect me.” Technically, she wanted to protect her painting of the gray wolf. But hewasthe gray wolf.

A long, low whistle. “She’s got balls.”

“She didn’t know anything about mages or werewolves. Will you help?”

“Maybe.” When he growled, she laughed. “Calm down, wolf. Until I know the problem, I won’t know if it’s something I can undo.”

“Who are you?” Luna’s voice was strained but steady. “You know our names. We deserve to know yours.”

“Call me Onyx.” Kade made note that she didn’t say that was her name only that it was what they could call her. Secretive. Not surprising, given what she was. “Who was the mage who zapped you?”

“Solange Dupree.” It was Luna who answered. Her gaze was locked on the phone in his hand, as if it was a lifeline. And in a way, it was. If Onyx wouldn’t help them or failed, he didn’t know where else to turn.

The white wolf.

Shit, he should have thought of that first, but they’d spent a lifetime avoiding each other until very recently. He was used to going through his network of acquaintances and contacts for answers. It was second nature.

“I’d say you’re screwed. Solange Dupree is dangerous, not to mention narcissistic, powerful, and determined, willing to do anything to get what she wants. Anyone who gets in her way better start praying to whatever deity they believe in.”
