The memories were too fresh, and talking about it was stirring them up. Wanting this done, he forged onward. “We ended up battling on that plane. The conduit is closed, and Solange was defeated, for now. She won’t stop.” He looked Devlin straight in the eyes. “We have to work together or none of us will ever be safe.”

Devlin nodded. “Our story is similar. Zoe was taken, and there was magic and death and an explosion. When the dust settled, we were alive. You mated Luna.” He nodded at the edges of the scars barely visible above the neckline of her shirt.

“As you did Zoe.” They were like two cautious players in a chess game, neither wanting to tip their hand by revealing too much. “We’re on the same side. Both of us want to protect our mates. They’ll never be safe as long as our enemies live.”

“They’ll go for the black wolf next.” Luna had listened quietly until now.

“Why do you say that?” Zoe asked.

“They’ve tried and failed with us. The black wolf is an unknown. We have to warn him. If Solange stays true to form, there’s likely another unsuspecting woman out there in danger.” Concern vibrated in every word his mate spoke.

“Dagen Kern is as elusive as the wind.” It was frustrating as hell. “He doesn’t answer texts or phone calls. I’ve warned him. Unless he’s willing to talk, there’s nothing else we can do.”

“I hope they’re both safe, but I fear for them.” Luna leaned her head against his shoulder.

Dagen Kern stepped out of the shower, water dripping over the tattoo on his chest. He was tired, a rare occurrence. He thrived on juggling a hundred tasks at once, his mind needing the stimulation. Wrapping a towel around his waist, he bypassed his bed and headed to his office.

Sleep was a luxury. Things were coming to a head. Instinct warned it would be soon. His private line rang. It was a number known only to a handful of people. Recognizing the caller, he grabbed the headset and slipped it on. “How may I be of assistance?”

“I wanted to thank you again for all you did. Luna and I are heading out.” It had been strange to meet another lone wolf. The connection he’d felt with Kade Alvarez had been a surprise. He hadn’t decided if it was good or bad. Any personal entanglement was a potential weakness.

“You pay for services.” It was one of the ways he’d amassed his fortune.

“You went above and beyond. I owe you. I said it before, but if you ever need anything, I’m there.”

“I’ll keep it in mind.” He hesitated before adding, “Stay safe.”

“That’s the plan.”

Ending the call, he removed the headset and tossed it down on the desk. Another operator was in charge for the next eight hours, barring an emergency. He had contractors on jobs around the world. He’d have to close it all down soon, at least temporarily, while he dealt with his own problems.

He wondered if Kade had suspected he might be more than a normal wolf. The gray wolf had given him a few suspicious glances, but his focus had been on rescuing his woman. And Dagen had taken the precaution of wearing false skin to cover his tattoo. Without the visible marking, he was nothing more than a black-haired, black-eyed wolf. Unlike the other lone wolves, his coloring made it easier for him to blend among the population.

Back in his bedroom, he stretched out on the bed, but sleep eluded him. With a growl, he punched his pillow and rolled over onto his side. It was all fine and good for the other two to connect and mate with the woman they’d been magically linked to. They’d been ordinary women, strangers.

Unlike them, he’d not only gone looking, but he’d found the one linked to him. There was no way in hell he’d ever trust her. Where that left them, he had no idea, but that was a problem for tomorrow.

The love doesn’t end here…
