When I reach the final page, there’s a strange letter underlined three times.

‘F’?

I stare at the grade in disbelief. I’ve never earned less than an ‘A minus’ on my writing; even then, that’s rare.

My blood boils and I’m unable to focus on the class discussion. When I glance over June Kline’s shoulder and see her score, I nearly lose it.

He gave her a B plus?

There’s no way that the girl who uses ChatGPT for every assignment, all while paying me to pen her smaller papers, has a higher grade.

“See you all next class,” Mr. Donovan says, and I rush down the steps.

“Excuse me, Mr. Donovan,” I say.

“Yes?” He doesn’t look at me.

“I was hoping you could explain why you scored my paper this way.”

“I don’t discuss grades outside of my office hours.”

“Well, when are those?”

“Read the updated syllabus, and you’ll know.”

“It’s practically the same as the one Mr. Jenkins left,” I say. “Hewas supposed to teach this course, and he always spoke to students after class.”

“Do I look like Mr. Jenkins?”

“You look like you’re being an asshole for no reason.”

“Excuse me?” He finally glances up.

“I mean, you look like you’re being difficult for no reason, sir.”

“Anything else, Genevieve Edwards?” he asks. “Then again, is that the name you’re going by today, or is there another?”

I suck in a breath, and a petty smile dances across his lips.

“I honestly hope you’re not planning to hold Saturday night over my head this entire semester.” I try to remain calm. “I’m just trying to talk about my grade.”

“My office hours are listed on the updated syllabus,Miss Edwards.” He emphasizes my name. “Read them and plan your time accordingly.”

I glare at him as he shuts his briefcase. “That’s it?”

“Yes.” He glares right back at me. “That’s it.”

LIAM

Genevieve rushes out of the auditorium, and I hang back and sigh. Seeing her in passing around this campus would’ve been one thing, but having to face her three times a week in my class is far too many.

She’s already steered me off track after a mere hour, but thankfully none of the students noticed that today’s lesson was intended for next week.

As I’m considering a way to get rid of her, my phone buzzes in my pocket.
