If something happens to him?—

Vito opens the door of the limo. I glance at Clara and clutch the purse in my lap. Then she exchanges a look with Vito, who flashes me a small, apologetic smile. He grabs my purse, and I push him, but being twice my size, he quickly outmaneuvers me and takes it away.

Panting, I launch myself at him, but he puts a hand up. “Hey. That’s my purse.”

He opens it. “I’m sorry, but you won’t need your phone…” he says, then lifts the handgun that Matteo gave me. “Or this.”

Clara lifts an eyebrow. “Seems like you weren’t that unprepared after all.”

“Given the company, that’s only fair,” I say.

“You won’t have to worry about a thing, Sienna. It may not look like it now, but your life will be better once you marry Francesco. You’re the heiress to your father’s empire, and you'll thrive with Francesco by your side. You’ll be safe,” Clara says, a twinkle in her eyes like she drank the Kool-Aid and believes her words.

She’s so sick that I don’t know if I feel sorrier for me or her—wait a minute…

I have no way of contacting Matteo. I have no gun. And according to her, I’m not even going back home tonight.

Fear pumps in my bloodstream.

I’m definitely sorrier for me.

Matteo

I checkmy Find My Phone app, looking for Sienna’s phone. I zoom in on the result, and the location shows an area adjacent to the main Caruso home. Could be a guest house or a large garage.

Sighing, I toss the phone onto the couch. She’s been gone for an hour, and I’m already going crazy. The phone location may be outside the main house because they’re probably having some of the party there—or some outdoor activity.

I shouldn’t have let her go alone, but I’m picking up our passports tomorrow.

Early morning.

Then, we’ll escape and, at last, be done.

I can’t wait for the wedding day anymore. I don’t want to risk higher security or the idea of having her around Francesco for any amount of time. No, it’s settled. My mom has already sold her home, and I did the same with my condo.

We’re leaving as soon as possible.

I leave the guest house and go out for some fresh air.

All I need to do is keep busy these next few hours until she’s back, so I don’t go crazy.

I walk, pacing the groveled path. Then, I hear two bodyguards sweeping the area as routine. Diego and Elia are both in their twenties and have been working for about a year. Unlike me, they both wanted to work for Antonio and have no ethical conundrums.

“So you’re changing your shift?” Elia asks.

“Yes. Much better. I got it in the bag now. Vito okayed it,” Diego says.

“Vito?”

“Yes. He’s our new boss. Mr. Mancini hasn’t made it official yet, but he will tomorrow morning,” Elias says.

Tomorrow morning. My gut clenches like I’ve been punched hard. What’s going on? Antonio didn’t tell me anything. I’m aware Vito will replace me, but he hasn’t done it yet. I’m considering questioning these two naïve fools when their conversation resumes.

“How about Matteo?” Diego asks.

Elia coughs. “I think he’s done.”
