He clears his throat like he’s shocked. “Are you sure? I don’t want to rush you into anything you aren’t ready for, Makaylie. What you went through, I could never imagine. I can hold out for as long as it takes, baby.”

Smiling, I stand and move in front of him between his legs, wrapping my arms around his neck. “Cain, I’m okay. I want to be with you to take away the memories of him…there. I need you to bethere. Only you.”

His face falls as he nods in understanding before I press my lips to his harder than I have in a long while. He kisses me back, our tongues dancing together in a symphony of passion. I’m glad Mississippi River Park is empty right now with this little display of affection. My fingers thread into his hair as I hold his head to mine and we kiss tenderly for the first time since we broke up. It’s perfect and even more perfect to finally be back on the right path.

We know we still have some issues to discuss, but we love each other. I realize even though Cain has some overbearing issues, they come from a good place, and we can work through those problems together.

One day, hopefully, he will tell me more about what he does for a living, and I’m hoping it’s sooner rather than later, but I am not going to push.

Soon, though.

Suddenly, his cell rings, making him groan into my mouth. I giggle and pull back from him as he shakes his head, looks to his pocket, and huffs. “Fuck it. It can go to voice mail.”

Pursing my lips, I pull back, shoving my hand into his pocket, pulling out his cell, and pushing it toward him. “Answer it! It could be important. It might be Rodberg or Joey,” I say.

He looks down at the caller ID, and his body stiffens. Immediately, he sits taller and clenches his jaw, looking around like he’s trying to check if anyone is there. “Fuck!” he murmurs, causing me to instantly tense. “Sorry, little dove, I have to take this. Stay here. Don’t move. Sit on the concrete stair so I can see you,” he demands.

I simply nod, choosing not to fight him.

He swipes his cell to answer as he starts walking away. “Boss, I’ve been expecting your call.” His voice is tense, hoarse, and breaks just a little.

I turn, sitting on the stairs, and wait for him. Chewing on my bottom lip, I watch as he rounds the corner. He’s still in view but far enough away that I can’t hear a word he’s saying.

I hate that he hides this from me.

I’m not stupid.

I am fully aware he’s involved in something untoward.

Something probably illegal.

But for some reason, it excites me. Who doesn’t love a bad boy?

I look out at the water, leaving Cain to his phone call. He doesn’t need me watching his every move. The river stirs in a slow, rhythmic motion, back and forth. It would be almost calming—if it wasn’t water. The faint sound of voices carries in the slight wind that’s picked up, and I peer over to where Cain was, to see he isn’t there anymore.

My eyes bug open, and I sit taller, looking around, but he isn’t anywhere.

There is a bush nearby, so I figure he must have gone behind that, but my skin prickles in goose bumps, and a shudder runs down my spine as anxiety sets in. Turning back around to face the water, I jolt back in surprise, nearly falling off the stairs. Two men are standing in front of me. One has thick, black dreadlocks hanging around his face with his left arm in a sling, and the other has bright red, almost orange hair. My breath catches in my throat as they stand staring at me with giant smirks on their faces. I turn to look for Cain, but he’s nowhere to be seen as I slowly turn back to the men who have taken a step closer.

“Can I help you?” I ask, all my muscles tense with the thought of something horrific happening to me again, but this time, it is double trouble.

“Maybe? Are you Makaylie Rayne?” the redhead asks.

I peek over my shoulder again—still no sign of Cain.

“Who wants to know?” I answer as they take another menacing step forward. My breath catches, making a small squeak pop from my throat.

They both chuckle, the corners of their mouths turning up in sinister smiles, instantly making me hyperaware that they’renothere for a friendly chat.

“I guess that’s a yes—”

“My boyfriend will be here any second. So don’t try anything, or I swear, hewillkill you,” I blurt out, not knowing what else to do or say.

They grin wide and look at each other like I’ve confirmed something I wasn’t supposed to.

“Oh, Cain’s not coming, sweetheart. He’s a little…” the redhead tilts his head to the side as he glances into the air as if he’s looking to choose his words wisely, “… tied up right now.”

My hands ball into fists as my anger burns red hot inside me. My teeth grind together, squeaking from the contact, as I lunge forward, grabbing the redhead by his collar and forcing him to look at me. “What did you do to him?” I yell in his face.
