“But the people who did this to her were there because ofyou. Look atyou. They were there foryou, weren’t they?” she snaps while reaching out, her palm slapping me hard across my face, the sting reverberating through my already bruised flesh.

Rodberg steps up, grabs her wrist, and holds it tightly as he glares.

“Don’t stop me, Rodberg. He needs to pay for this. Look at her.Look. At. Her!”

“Will you stop yelling? I have a headache,” Makaylie murmurs.

We all spin to watch her slowly open her beautiful crystal blue eyes. They shimmer with so much life behind them that I want to shout. It makes me want to jump for fucking joy.Fuck! It makes me want to sob like a little fucking pussy bitch.

I don’t care—I’m weak when it comes to her.

“Little dove? Baby,” I murmur, raising my hand to caress her cheek.

“You saved me,” she mumbles, and I nod as Joey lets out a small sob behind me.

“Yeah, baby, I’ll always save you.”

She looks into my eyes and weakly smiles. “I love you.”

My body slumps as I lean in and gently kiss her lips. “I love you too, so much,” I murmur against her lips.

I pull back, and she clears her throat, looking from me to Joey as she reaches her hand out to her. I don’t want to move, but I let Joey pass so she can move up next to Makaylie.

Her voice is weak, and I don’t want her to strain herself. “Joey, be good to Cain… please.”

My chest puffs out in pride, and I sit a little taller while Rodberg pats my shoulder. I turn to him, and he tilts his head toward the other side of the room.

Joey and Makaylie are having a moment, so I take a second to talk to Rodberg. Standing, I walk with him to the other side of the room.

He looks me up and down. “Have you been checked out?”

Shaking my head, I let out a huff. “No, I’m fine.”

“What did the EMTs say about your wounds?”

“I told them I got into a fight last night, and the wounds opened up when I jumped in the water. They were suspicious, saying if we were attacked, I should report it to the police. But obviously, I don’t want cops involved. So, they let it go.”

He rolls his shoulders and cracks his neck to the side. “Who came after you?”

I clench my jaw, reliving the memory. “Billy and Harry took me out while Alfie and Morgan cuffed a weight to Makaylie, put a sack over her head, and threw her in the fucking river.”

He rubs the back of his neck. “Fuck! This is worse than I thought. I knew Alfie would have no qualms turning on you, but Morgan? Shit, man.”

“Yeah, looks like it’s just you and me in this, but I have to keep Makaylie away from them. They have to think she’s dead.”

“Agreed, once she’s out of here, we need to go in and settle this shit with Hattrick, Cain.”

Running my hands through my hair, I look to Makaylie and nod.

I know I need to figure this out because, one way or another, my reign at the Baton Rouge Bachelors is coming to an end.

I can only hope when my time is up, it doesn’t end up with me being carried out in a body bag.
