Taking a step back from Haven, I glare. “You don’t know the shit I’ve been through.”

She shakes her head. “No. I don’t. But the thing is, Alpha, everyone’s been through or is going through shit. At least you have people around for you to lean on. Maybe you shouldn’t take that so much for granted. Not everyone has that kind of luxury in their lives.”

That hit right where it was meant to.

“You seem to know so much about me. What about you? Why have you got no one in your life?” I turn it back around on her.

She cranes her neck, like she’s uncomfortable talking about it, and goes to walk for the door. “I had a great time. Thanks for scratching my itch.” Haven heads for the door, and I reach out, grab her wrist, and force her to stop as I let out a scoff.

“An itch? Haven, last night wasnotan itch. I haven’t had sex like that…” I let out a heavy exhale. “Fuck! I don’t know if I’veeverhad sex like that. I certainly have never been unprotected with anyone other than my wife—”

“You’remarried?”she blurts out, the clear disgust in her tone is evident as she breaks free from my hold.

“Ex-wife,” I correct myself. “We’ve been divorced for about a year and a half now.”

Haven folds her arms across her chest and shrugs. “Sorry to hear that.”

“Don’t be… I’m not. We were good until we weren’t. Shit happened, and then we just couldn’t find our way back to each other like that. We’re still good friends, though.”

Haven raises a brow like she’s shocked to hear that. “So you’re telling me you have a club full of brothers, an ex-wife who still cares for you, and yet you still choose to sit alone in a bar and spend the night with a complete stranger instead of being withthem?”

Swallowing hard, this woman’s words make my stomach roll uneasily. “Are you a therapist or some shit?

She bursts out laughing. “Far from it. I think pain can sense pain. And I can see yours clearly. But maybe you need to find better ways of dealing with whatever it is you have going on?”

“Yeah… maybe. But you have to admit, the way we dealt with it last night was a fucking great way to deal?”

She chuckles with a beautiful smile lighting her gorgeous face. “Well, I won’t argue with you there. I’ve never had a guy come inside me twice so quickly before, so that was a first.”

My mind instantly thinks of when Livvy and I conceived Poppy, and my chest tightens in apprehension as I snap my head to Haven, realizing what I have done. “I… I hate to ask this, but we didn’t use a condom, and as you said, I came in you twice…” I leave it open for Haven to figure out what I’m asking.

She steps up to me, gripping my shoulder. “Don’t worry. I can’t get pregnant.”

Tilting my head, I wait for her to offer more information, but she doesn’t, so I press. “Because you’re on the pill?”

“Because I’m infertile. You have nothing to worry about.”

She seems young, too young to be infertile. I never asked her how old she was last night, so I feel like I should at least find out now. “Haven, how oldareyou?”

“You know it’s rude to ask a woman her age?” she scoffs.

“Do I look like the type of man to care about being rude?”

“No. Not even a little bit…” She chuckles. “I’m twenty-five.”

Rolling my shoulders, it all makes sense now as to why she is so agile, full of energy, and hard for me to keep up. “Yeah, that makes sense.”

“You’re not twenty-five, are you?” she asks.

Shaking my head, I scrub at my bearded chin. “I’m not even close to twenty-five.”

Haven smiles. “Thought so. The occasional gray hair gave it away. Though for a man in his late sixties, you do scrub up well—”

“Fuck you! I’m notthatold,” I berate while she laughs.

“Late thirties?” she asks, more seriously this time.

“Just turned forty last week.”
