He snorts, yanking off my boots, followed by my jeans and panties. He lays me back, naked, into the silky softness of his bed. “And you’re not the macho hardass you pretend to be, either. Now, get some rest. I’m gonna be right here.”

Exhaling, I close my eyes. I hear him walk off to another room within his bedroom, but I am far too comfortable to care rightnow. I snuggle into the comforter, getting cozy, listening to him moving about. I’m almost asleep when the bed dips beside me. “It’s okay, you keep resting. I’m just going to clean you up.”

Opening my eyes, Alpha sits beside me, washcloth in hand and a small bowl on the nightstand. He rinses the cloth and moves it under my nose. I grimace from the pain, and he scowls. “Shit, sorry.”

I shake my head and move my hand out to sit on his knee. “Thank you. You didn’t need to do this.”

He continues removing the dry blood from my face, rinsing the cloth in the bowl. “I might be an asshole, Haven, but I’m not completely soulless. I know how to take care of people when they need it.”

I figure I’ll try my luck and say, “Like Livvy?”

His hand halts, looking into my eyes. “What do you know?” he asks, moving the cloth into the water and rinsing, the water turning blood red.

“You were married.”

“We were. But that’s ancient history, Haven. Livvy and I were never going to work. We’re just too different.”

“I see that. She’s…” I hesitate, trying to find the right words.

“Innocent, naïve, a good girl,” he replies for me.

Shaking my head, I counter, “She’s perfect. Faultless.”

Alpha lets out a laugh. “I can assure you, Livvy isnotfaultless. She may look the picture of perfection, but everyone has flaws, Haven. Especially Livvy.” He takes my hands and starts wiping the blood from them. “And I regret that you had to meet her that way, but you wouldn’t go to the hospital, and there was no way I wasn’t getting you seen to. I had no other choice.”

I reach out, grab his hand, and look him in the eyes. “It’s fine. I understand. You were looking out for me. I appreciate that. I would have liked to have known beforehand so I didn’t tell her I was fucking your brains out, but, lesson learned, I guess.”

He places the washcloth and bowl on the dresser, then shrugs out of his cut, placing it on the nightstand, and moves to pull off his shirt. “Shove over.”

“But don’t you have club shit to deal with?” I question as he removes the rest of his clothing.

“I do, but right now, I want to lay in this bed and make sure you get the rest you need. So roll over, and let me spoon you.”

I let out a laugh. “Didn’t pick you for a spooning kind of guy.”

“Spin the fuck over and shut up.”

I let out a laugh, rolling over, his arm sliding under my head, the other over my hip, pulling me back to him. His body presses hard against me, and I have to admit, this is fucking nice. There’s nothing sexual. The man is simply cuddling me, and I really, really like it.

Closing my eyes, I sink back into him and relax completely for the first time in the longest time.

And the scary part is…

… I could get used to this.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Haven

A warm, heavy breath against my ear stirs me from a restless sleep. I tense, taking in my surroundings, as my heart rate kicks up.

“Relax, little lamb,” Alpha whispers. His fingers brush up and down my side, over my ribs, and down my hip, the movement calming.

I take a deep breath and wince, the start of a headache making itself known. “How long was I asleep?”

“I wouldn’t call it sleep, but you’ve been dozing off and on for about an hour now. How are you feeling?”

“I’m fi—”
