And for my actions that day, I was dishonorably discharged.

No pension.

No insurance.

No thank you.

Just a kick in the ass and a get the fuck out.

I had so much going for me back then, working my way up through the ranks. My wife, Livvy, supported my career and stood by my side no matter what. I glance over my shoulder to the bookcase and the photograph of me with Livvy and our daughter, Poppy. All of us at the clubhouse, smiling, and having a great time with the pigs at our farm out back.

Sadness washes over me.

I miss those days.

It was simpler back then.

I was thrown out of the military, the only thing I knew.

Livvy stuck by me, even though I was a pariah to all our military friends, and I lost my way. I wanted to give a big middle finger to the government for screwing me and my wife over.

What better way to do that than joining a motorcycle club, right?

I could stick it to the man while also bringing in the income I had lost by losing all the benefits when the Army unceremoniously kicked me out. I only wanted to do right by my wife and the family we were creating together.

My eyes shift to my daughter, Poppy, again, an ache buried deep in my soul as I look at her beautiful little face. A pain I don’t want to feel anymore. So I turn back and pick up my book and continue to read, trying to stop my mind from rehashing that old shit like it always does.

A soft knock on the Chapel door makes me groan, and I glance up to see Swift, my VP, with a grin on his face. “Pres, you busy?”

I grunt out something unintelligible as I continue pretending to read my book. Swift chuckles and enters, carrying what looks like a gift basket. “This came for you. Loki checked it over. Seems legit.”

My eyes shift when I look at the basket and huff, signaling for him to bring it over. “What the fuck is this shit?”

Swift chuckles, rolling his shoulders. “Secret admirer? Maybe it’s that girl from the bar the other night? You guys seemed pretty cozy?”

Glaring at him, I huff. “Fuck off!” I grunt a few more expletives before pulling the card away from the little stick and opening the envelope to read it.

Dear Stone,

Happy Birthday!

I know you don’t like to celebrate, and I know the brothers won’t be doing anything for you, but I didn’t want today to go by without you knowing that at least one person out there thinks you’re worth it.

Don’t drown yourself today, okay?

Please… for me?

Love always,

Livvy xo

Swift slides into his seat to the right of me. “I know that look, Pres. That’s the same look you get every time you hear from Livvy. Is it from her?”

Scrunching up the piece of paper, I throw it in the trash and sink back into my seat. “Yeah,” is all I can manage.

He frowns, his eyes sympathetic. “This for your birthday?” I glare at him. “What? I didn’t wish you a happy birthday, Pres. I’m just asking ifshedid.”

“Yeah… can you take the basket down to Dutch and Ellie? They can do whatever the fuck they want with what’s inside.” I shove it away from me toward Swift, and he stands.
