Letting out a fake laugh, I shake off my weirdness with a nod. “Yeah, just got caught up in the emotion of it all. When did Poppy pass?”

Alpha grimaces. “Two years ago.”

“And yousawthe body?” I ask for clarification because this makes no sense. At all.

“I arrived too late. I found her, and Poppy was burned so badly that she was unrecognizable, but her stuffed pig toy was on her body. That’s how I knew it was her.”

Furrowing my brows, I tilt my stature. “And you didn’t question whyshewas burned, but the pig wasn’t?”

He scowls. “It was clearly a message to prove to me itwasher.”

Oh, for fuck’s sake.

I hate that Alpha and Livvy have been living this lie.

Especially because I know for a fact it was a ruse.

Because Poppy isnotdead.

She’s at The Nest being trained to be an assassin.

This doesn’t sit well with me.

But honestly, I don’t know what I can do right now to help the situation.

I need time to think this over.

I need to research how to get Poppy out.

Without the other birds preying on me.

Right now, though, Alpha is having a shit of a day, and I need to simply be here for him.

I slide my arms around him, leaning my forehead against his. “I am so… so fucking sorry.”

His arms grip my waist tight. It’s almost painful. His somber eyes meet mine, and he inhales deeply. “Today fucking sucks… but having you here helps more than you know, little lamb.”

Smiling, I gently lean in, pressing my lips to his. The kiss is soft, tender, starkly contrasting to how we normally kiss, but I like it as my tongue slowly dances with his. I press my body against him, just needing Alpha to know that nothing he has said today changes how I feel about him. If anything, it makes me want him more, which makes this mission, this task I have been given, that much more fucking dangerous.

Because I am definitely falling for him.

There is no question about that.

But if he finds out that I know his daughter is alive and I didn’t bring her back to him instantly, there’s no way he’s going to forgive me.

Even if it’s not as simple as it sounds.

There are moving parts at play here.

Multiple pieces on this giant chess board, and I’m left with no legal moves to make. And if I’m not careful, Iwillbe the King who’s swept off the board.

Permanently.
