They all snort with laughter.

“Nobody ever thinks they will, but just you wait until you spit out a couple of kids and your pelvic floor starts to sag,” one of the other women speaks up. She’s older, but still perfectly preserved, “Then suddenly, he’s ‘working late’ all the time, sneaking around with some bimbo with incredible breasts off that HBO show. You’ll be glad you got that prenup locked down.”

“Unless you’re holding out for the inheritance when he kicks it?” someone says.

“That’s smart,” Another chimes in. “The long game!”

“I don’t know, Robert looks healthy as a horse to me.” DeeDee says with a smirk. “You might be waiting around a while for him to keel over and die!”

“Good.” Avery hold her chin high, looking fierce under her oversized pink spa headband. “I love Robert and I’m planning on spending a long and happy marriage with him. No divorce lawyers, or inheritance, or anything. I’m making a promise to the man, and I’m going to keep it. That’s the whole point of this wedding.”

There’s silence. The other woman look surprised, but I have to smile at her loyalty.

“To Avery and Robert,” Ivy says loudly, raising her glass. “And the happily-ever-after they deserve.”

“Here, here!” I echo.

The others join the toast, with vague murmurs of agreement. Then, suddenly, a shriek.

“Oww!” DeeDee splashing her feet out of the tub with a cry. “They won’t stop biting. Help me! Ithurts!”

HAZEL

By the timethe afternoon cools, and it’s time to gather at the private dock for tonight’s big event, I’m feeling an impatient itch in the back of my mind. Something restless.

Somethinghorny.

I haven’t seen Josh all day, and it’s given me long enough to starting second guessing myself. Should I be worried that he was such a gentleman, and didn’t leap at the chance to ravish me then and there? Was I rude not to invite him in and… return the favor?

But when I arrive down by the water, and see him waiting with some of the other guys, my anxiety melts away – replaced with the delicious fizz of butterflies in my stomach.

“Hey there,” he says, immediately coming to greet me. His hair is damp from the shower, and he’s wearing a blue button down that brings out the gold of his tan. Josh leans in to kiss my cheek, then gives me a long, appreciative stare that melts me from the inside out. “You look incredible.”

“Thank you.” I feel a glow. Tonight’s outfit is another silky dress, courtesy of the resort store: navy silk shot through with metallic thread, it drapes low in the back, and hugs my hips. I’ve pulled up my hair in a messy twist, and picked out some dangling, delicate earrings.

I feel slinky and seductive, a million miles away from my usual brisk efficient vibe.

“So, was girls’ day as dramatic and tense as our golf trip?” Josh asks, as we move to board one of the luxury speedboats bobbing off the dock.

“Dramatic, why?”

Josh chuckles. “Where do I start?” he asks, taking my hand to help me aboard. His touch seems to sizzle through me, and I have to grab the railing to keep from face planting right there onto the deck.

Real smooth.

“Easy,” Josh says, immediately placing a steadying hand on my back. We make it safely aboard, and move to the railing as the boat pulls away, but he doesn’t drop his hand. It stays, lightly grazing my bare back, distracting me so much, I’m barely following his story about bitter golf rivalries and suspected cheating. “In the end, half the group stormed off, and Robert swore he’d donate the betting pot to charity rather than hand it over to a snake.”

“Is everyone OK?” I ask, forcing myself to focus on his words – and not the hypnotic feel of his fingertips brushing against my lower spine.Back and forth, back and forth. “Do we need to have security come along for dinner tonight? We don’t want a fist fight over the filets.”

Josh grins. “It’s already forgotten. They were toasting scotch and planning a rematch at Shady Pines, the last I saw.”

“Phew.” Our eyes catch, and I feel a rush of something hot and breathless, just remembering last night.

Josh, gazing up at me from between my thighs, spreading my legs wider, and leaning in…

His smile turns wicked, like he knows exactly what’s on my mind.
