She perked up at that. Surprise? Nerves filled her—was the surprise the proposal? She really wished she hadn’t spoiled it for him.

“What’s the surprise?” she asked, and he shook his head.

“Get dressed, then I’ll show you.”

Her pink tulledress poofed out around her hips, like a princess dress. She felt a little embarrassed about it, but he’d assured her no one would think twice about her outfit. Plus, she felt super cute in it.

She was impatiently waiting for Jett to finish doing whatever he was doing and show her the surprise! Even though she kind of knew what it already was, she was still excited to see what he had planned.

The bedroom door firmly shut, and she pushed up on her toes, wiggling her fingers excitedly. Ugh! Could he be any slower? Snails moved faster than him.

“Come on, slow-poke!” she called, watching him meander his way toward her.

“Patience is a?—”

“If you’re about to say patience is a statue, I’m going to lose it. We don’t have time for that!”

He paused a few feet from her and tilted his head to the side. “What?”

“You’ve never heard the saying before? Patience is a statue?”

“That’s…” He choked on a laugh, his eyes twinkling. “That’s not the saying, pretty girl.”

She huffed and folded her arms over her chest. “Yes, it is. I’ve said it my whole life.” His shoulders shook as he laughed, wiping his eyes. He was so freaking dramatic. “What?”

“It’s a virtue,” he chuckled. “Not a statue.”

Abbie just stared at him. “No, it’s not.”

Her words made him laugh even harder—so hard he nearly doubled over. “Daddy, you’re being dramatic,” she told him.

“I’m sorry, baby.” But he was still laughing, so she didn’t think he wasthatsorry. It looked like he was trying to hold it in, but his chest was still vibrating, and she could see the crinkles at the corners of his eyes. “You’re just so fucking cute.”

Even though a warmth spread through her at the words and the love-sick way he was staring at her made a swarm of butterflies erupt in her belly, she rolled her eyes. But a smile still pulled at her lips, and it wasn’t long before she was laughing with him.

“It’s really statue?” she asked, and he nodded, sweeping her into his arms. He pressed a firm kiss to her lips, and she melted fully against him.

“It can be whatever you want it to be, pretty girl.”

She rested her head against his chest, and he slid her body down his until her feet hit the floor. God, she loved this man. Sometimes, she forgot how truly lucky she was to have him.

“Ready for your surprise?” he asked, running his hand down her back.

“Lead the way, Daddy.”

“You need to close your eyes. No peeking.”

She was giddy as she slapped her hands over her eyes. A high-pitched squeal burst from her lips as she bounced excitedly on her toes.

“I. Cannot. Wait!”

“Keep your eyes shut,” Jett firmly told her, leading her forward. The front door opened, and the fresh outside scent hit her. Goosebumps rippled over her skin as anticipation filled her. Was he going to propose here? At the house?

Her eyes stayed closed behind her hands as he locked the door, the sound of the bolts locking into place adding to her already nervous energy. What did he have planned? Had he asked Chris about this? Or Ottie? Likely not her father.

A sudden pang of sadness shot through her at the thought of her family, but then everything they'd said, everything they'd done to her and to Jett flashed in her mind, and it eased some of that ache.

But she did really miss Chris. Maybe she should call him?—
