“It was a registered vehicle.”

“And?” Ari said in a sing-song voice.

“I also rang the local police station, and they confirmed he was roadside assistance.” I sighed. “And they said he was getting married in five days.”

“I know you did. Met the officer. Good mates with Macca. I’m sorry I worried you. It’s nice to know you’ve got my back.”

“We’re friends, Ari. That’s what we do.”

There was a knock in the background at Ari’s end.

“Hang on, someone’s just at the door.”

I pressed my phone against my ear on maximum volume to snoop on what was happening.

“G’day,” a woman said. “Heard ya got picked up by Macca today.”

“News travels way fast round here,” Ari answered. “And I’m guessing from your red hair, you’re his bride-to-be, Kayla. Congratulations!”

“Ha, yeah. His buck’s night with the boys was going to be tomorrow at the rodeo.”

The rodeo trip was actually a buck’s night?!Oh, hell no!

Kayla continued before Ari could answer. “Look, Macca said ya did make-up for TV? Any chance ya could do my wedding make-up? The beauty chick has up and cancelled on me.”

“Oh, umm …”

“Be nice to have make-up done proper, you know? Look swish in the photos and that. Pay ya cash.”

“Well … um.”

Kayla said an amount and Ari agreed, and then a door closed, presumably with Kayla leaving.

“I just got a job. Bridal make-up,” Ari said in a rush. “Macca told his fiancé I’m a make-up artist.”

“Yeah, I heard.” She really had told Macca a lot of her personal details during the drive to town. “Surprised you accepted.”

Ari inhaled sharply. “What does that mean?”

“Nothing. It’s just …”

“What?

“You said last week you didn’t want to do make-up stuff anymore.”

“Yeah, well, it’s not like TV make-up. Been a while since I’ve done bridal make-up. And it’s a cash job, and I have a cracked piston and towing costs to pay.”

I remained silent.

“I need the money,” Ari insisted and moaned. “Jet, am I weird for not wanting to do make-up anymore?”

“I don’t know anything about make-up, Ari.” He chuckled.

“Like, I mean … am I weird that I want to do something completely different? It’s not a Wes thing, although that’s a part of it. It’s just … I was good at make-up but I’ve never really cared about it, and I want to do something I care about.”

“Not weird at all. That sounds awesome.”

“The thought of doing make-up professionally makes my stomach twist. I guess it’s to do with Wes but … also, I genuinely want to do something else with my life.” There were muffled noises, like Ari was getting settled. “Do you care about sheep?”
