I quickly typed back a reply.

Me: what about Flo, your bestie? I thought she was going to be your MOH

Ash: she’s a bridesmaid. But I want my sister to be my maid of honour and Flo is totally fine with that

Ash: Mum is insisting she is doing my hair and I think I may actually kill her

Ash: I’m not asking you to do my make-up. I just want the Wilde Women to be free of working at the wedding.

I felt a wave of relief I wasn’t expecting. But if Ash had asked me to do it, I would have said yes. For her, it wasn’t work.

Me: if I come, I’ll do it

Ash: is that a weird way of saying you are coming to my wedding?

Ash: you know I’m not intending on having another wedding in my lifetime, so if you want to see me do the deed, you’d better come

Me: I’ll think about it

Ash: while you think about it, I’m emailing you your flight details so you can fly in and fly out. I’ve already bought the tickets

Midmorning,I called Ash on video chat.

“Please tell me you are calling to say you are confirmed as coming to my wedding.” I cringed, and Ash rolled her eyes. “It’s him, isn’t it?”

“Who?”

“You are such a dumbass. I thought older sisters were meant to be the mature ones, but here we are.” She inhaled a dramatic breath, flicking hair from her face. “I mean Jet, you idiot.”

I sighed. “Sort of.” Ash sighed, but I cut her off. “I called for another reason.”

“Which is?”

“I asked you before about how you knew Cody was right for you.”

“You did.”

“So … how did you?” I implored.

Ash cleared her throat. “I had to learn twice that he was for me. I had to believe what we had was stronger than the online hate of strangers. And stronger than doubt. And that we were going to be a family.” She touched her belly, perhaps as a reflex. “It was tough, but it was more than worth it in the end.”

A freak accident while on duty as a firefighter had cost Ash all her memories of Cody. They’d rebuilt their relationship fromscratch, and Ash decided to take a second chance on him. And now they were getting married.

“I wrote Jet a letter apologising, but I haven’t heard a thing since. It’s been two weeks since I posted it and not a word. I practically begged him to be my friend after being so awful to him.”

“What if he can’t be friends with you because he’s in love with you?”

“I don’t want to lose my friend.”

“You might not have a choice if it’s too hard for him to be your friend when he knows you don’t love him back. That’s not fair at all.” My body slumped. “My God, look at you. Let me put it this way. How has it felt all these weeks not talking to Jet?” Ash asked.

“Awful, like a part of me was missing.” I took a deep breath. “When I talked to him, I felt I could do anything. And that scared me, but it scares me more not having him in my life.”

“Shit.”

Ash was looking at her screen, but not at me. “What?”

“Nothing,” Ash said too quickly, rapidly pressing buttons.
