I sigh as he closes the door behind him.

Well, this night ended differently than I originally thought it would.

Turning down the hall, I head for the shower making a detour into my room to get my toy from my bedside table.

Chapter 6

Cass

It’s been a few dayssince my date with Jake and I’m still wandering around in a fog. The dance was amazing. Of course, we couldn’t stick with the no-touching rule while we were dancing but Jake respected my boundaries.

Arin doesn’t need me today, so I decided to cook. Being on the run and alone I’ve been surviving on fast food, microwave food, and food other people have cooked. I miss cooking for myself. Maybe I’ll even invite Jake to eat with me.

That last thought makes me smile. I never imagined I would be interested in a man after Lincoln wrapped his hands around my throat trying to kill me. All the months I rode my bike up the coast not one man caught my attention.

It’s warm today, almost summer in Alaska so I decide to walk a few blocks over to the grocery store.

About halfway there something sends shivers up my spine. I stop and look around but there doesn’t seem to be anyone else out on the street. Maybe it’s just my imagination?

Shaking off the creepy feeling, I decide to invite Jake over for dinner.

Gathering all the ingredients I’m going to need to make a salad, lasagna and garlic bread I get that creepy feeling again. It feels like someone is watching me.

Standing in line to check out, I glance at the mirror above the register and see a man. He has his back to me, looking for something on the endcap.

He’s tall and slim with slightly graying hair. While I’m watching I see him run his hands through his hair in a way that reminds me of Lincoln.

So focused on the man, I don’t notice the line in front of me move until a woman behind me clears her throat.

I can’t move, I can’t breathe, my chest is pounding, my entire body starts to shake.

When the woman rudely pushes her shopping cart against me, I snap out of it. Grabbing my purse, I leave the buggy behind and run out the door.

Without conscious thought I find myself standing outside Jake’s gym. Out of breath and still shaking, I pause to pull myself together.

Opening the door and walking inside, Jake is teaching a class. So I head back to his office. Making myself comfortable, I think about what just happened.
