After seeing my bestfriend Austin Montgomery fight off the media vultures after his hag of an ex-wife tried to trash his life, I decided I wanted out.

Mixed martial arts is incredible. It keeps my body and mind fit, but I don’t want to deal with all the bullshit that comes with being a celebrity.

When I made my final decision, I called up Austin with the idea that maybe I could settle down close to him but he had a request for me. He knew I didn’t have anything holding me to a specific location.

“You move to Anchorage Alaska to keep an eye on my little sister and I’ll finance your startup cost.” He told me.

I didn’t even know he had a little sister until he explained that she was actually his new wife’s friend.

They have a bond that runs deeper than friendship and his wife Lilly was worried about Arin being so far from home.

Arin and Taylor met me at the airport. They welcomed me right into their family and the community swallowed me up as if I had always been here. Now I wouldn’t consider living anywhere else.

Arin told me about self defense class being a requirement to work for Poison Pen and I instantly agreed to teach it.

I thought it would be a small class with just Arin and Mika but when word got out, my roster filled fast.

Last week Arin called me about a new hire and getting her on my schedule. The only available spot I had was my early morning class.

I was about to offer to change up my schedule because I know the ladies at Poison Pen often work late into the night, but they assured me it would work.

Today is supposed to be her first day. Getting twenty women to spread out and stretch is like trying to herd cats.

I’m sure it wouldn’t be so bad if they were actually here to learn something but this group seems more intent on gossiping and ogling my body.

I know immediately which one she is. Cassandra lurks at the back of the room and looks like she really doesn’t want to be here.

I don’t know if it’s because of the gaggle of gossiping geese or the early morning hour.

She’s about average height with long silver hair tied up in dreds. Her body has the perfect shape, not skinny like a board but not overly chunky either.

When she makes eye contact with me, I feel a jolt of electricity through my body. Her green cat-like eyes hold a world of pain.

I don’t have time to stare like a star-struck kid so I pull myself together and get on with my class.

Around halfway through I notice she is no longer part of the group.

How in the world did she sneak out without me seeing her leave?

After dismissing the class, I wander back towards my office and that’s where I find her.

She’s sitting in the hall with her legs pulled up to her chest. She doesn’t see me coming until I slide down the wall next to her and hand her a bottle of water.

“Cassandra, right?” I ask. “You know you can’t learn to defend yourself unless you actually participate in the class?”

“Sorry,” she responds. “Just didn’t get much sleep.”
