Snake

We land at the airportin the late afternoon and I help all the other guys unload our gear from the plane.

Apparently the prospects couldn’t meet us here to help because they did the unthinkable. They mowed down Mina’s prized roses she’s been nursing for a few years now.

“I can’t believe they mowed them down.” Bear shakes his head.

“I can. We did tell them to mow and it’s not like you can tell what they are.” Sprocket comments, loading up a trunk full of surveillance gear.

“That’s true! They look like all the other weeds and sticker bushes.” Gear throws in his superior knowledge.

I can’t disagree with them. The flowers they produce are pretty but they don’t last long leaving behind a bunch of thorns that wrap around you, eating you alive.

“At least we don’t have to worry about trimming them back for a while.” Fang smiles remembering the one time we were cleaning up and went to trim them. Mina came flying out there trying to beat us all with a broom until the Prez calmed her down making her realize they did need trimming.

“That’s it.” Prez says, throwing the last duffel bag into the back. “Let’s get home boys!”

A round of “Hell yes” goes through us all.

I briefly think about just going straight to Andi’s but I probably should clean up a bit first so I follow the rest of the guys to the clubhouse.

I park my bike close to the door since I don’t plan on taking too long and head towards my room in the back. I’m almost there when Sally stops me.

“Snake? You have some mail that came in while you were gone. I stuffed it under your door for you.”

“Thanks, Sally.” I nod, continuing on my way.

“You’re welcome.” I hear her say just before she giggles. Dane must have grabbed her. I still don’t know why he’s not claimed her as an Ole Lady.

Unlocking my door, I step inside, tossing my keys on the dresser. Seeing a letter on the floor, I pick it up and look at who it’s from.

It looks to be from a lawyer but I have no idea why he’d be contacting me unless it’s about needing a new surveillance system for his office or something.

I don’t usually work for just anyone. Most of my clients come to me by word of mouth though, so I open the letter instead of tossing it in the trash.

Mr. Adler,

I’ve been trying to find you for several months now. Your friend, Hank Blankenship, hired me as his estate attorney many years ago.

As you may or may not yet know, he passed away during a robbery in Chicago. I’m truly sorry for your loss as it was my impression, the two of you were as close as brothers.

He left with me very clear and precise instructions on what he wanted should he pass away prematurely.

One of those instructions was to mail to you a letter that he wrote himself. I do not know what is in the letter myself. He did not disclose that information.

Once you have read the letter and had ample time to think over its contents, please give me a call so that we can discuss a time to meet to carry out the rest of Hank’s last will and testament.

Signed,

Justin Gills, Atty

Looking behind the attorney’s letter, there’s another envelope with my name on the front in Hank’s handwriting. Opening it, I scan it at first and several words pop out at me at once.

“What the fuck?” I ask, taking a seat on the bed to start at the beginning.

Gabe,

I wrote this in case anything ever happened to me and I guess, if you’re reading this, it did. I’m writing to ask you to take care of Andi. She deserved better than what I did to her and to you as well.
