Blaze holds me steady on my feet and turns to Kate. “Kate, I’ve got it from here. Thank you for bringing her home. Does she owe you anything?”

Kate’s eyes pop open big as a full moon. She shakes her head vehemently.

“Just doing a friend a favor.” She states her usual response when a cop asks if she’s giving rides for money. In my weakened stupor I smile and watch her leave. Blaze scoops me up in his arms again and carries me to my bed.

“Did you invite your ex-fiancé?” He asks as he shoves my covers aside with his elbow and slides me into the envelope of my sheets.

“No.” I mutter. “Just showed up.”

“What does he want?” Blaze pulls the sheet up to my shoulder.

I shrug. “He lies.”

“Where is he now?” Blaze sits beside me, causing the bed spread to pull taut across me.

“Some cougar picked him up.”

Blaze glares at me, his brow waffles in curious calculation. “So, he won’t be back here tonight?”

I shrug.

Blaze leans over to kiss my forehead. “You get some rest. And don’t worry about… Jason, right, that’s his name?”

My eyes pop open. How could he know that? “You investigating me, Detective?”

He chuckles. “You mentioned his name, I happened to remember.” Blaze explained.

“I did?” My eyes search Blaze’s. His lips just inches from where he had kissed my forehead. I tip my head back to align my mouth with his, and close my eyes. I can feel the heat radiate from his face as he stares at me. His scent fills my senses, tickling my libido.

If I am reading him wrong, I’m gonna die right here in this bed, but this feels right. His lips brush against mine and my heart is relieved. Slowly, I raise my arms and pull him closer into me. My blood surges in my ears, drowning out everything except his rapid breath. Our kiss deepens, our bodies come closer together. His tongue searches mine, teasingly, he finds me. Drawing circles around his tongue with mine, I playfully tease him back. He tastes like coffee. His scent fills my nostrils with a unique musk and manly soap. Had he just taken a shower? Wait!

I snap back. “I thought you were at work.”

His eyes open in surprise. “We reached an impasse and called it a night.”

“What kind of an impasse?”

He grins. “One where it is futile to continue, so we go home.”

I cock my head to one side, analyzing his face for a tell. “So, you haven’t found what you’re looking for.”

He kisses my lips. “No.” He kisses me again. “Have you?”

My eyes dart from his lips to his eyes. “I, uh.”

He smothers my mouth with his and I give in. I’m too weak to fight him and too overwhelmed with his sensual scent to resist. I arch my back, inviting him to join me under the covers. He stands and pulls at the button on his jeans, then the zipper.

“Maribeth?” Jason’s voice fills the room like a demolition ball crashing into the side of a dilapidated building. The walls around Blaze and I crash in a heap of dirt and debris.

I shove up onto my elbows, blinking the fog of lust out of my head.

“Jason! What the hell!”

Chapter Six?

Blaze taps on my front door at eight the next morning. I look out the window before opening the door to be sure it’s not Jason. After Blaze escorted him out, with his arm twisted so hard behind his back that I was afraid Blaze would pop Jason’s shoulder out of place, Jason mumbled something about staying somewhere else. Still, I was worried that Jason would show back up as soon as he thought the coast was clear. For all I know, Jason slept in his fancy little car in my driveway. But I also knew Blaze was used to pulling all night surveillance, and my house would be well protected from any mischief Jason thought he could get away with.

“You ready?” Blaze asks as soon as I open the door. I nod and walk out with him. He’s taking me to the hardware store and we are going to change my locks to heavy duty bolts that Jason or anybody else, like Frank Holmes, the previous owner, cannot open as if they were congealed lard instead of a lock and key. I glance at my driveway, to be sure it’s empty, before I follow Blaze down the three flights of stairs.
