“Why do you care, anyway?” Dixie cuts in from beside me.

“I don’t,” I say. “I just figured she’d be at all the parties.”

“You did used to have whores at the New Year’s party,” Cotton says, slapping my shoulder.

I scowl at him, but everyone else laughs, and the tension is forgotten.

“Let’s go dance,” Dixie says, standing and grabbing my hand.

“Might as well,” Duke says, standing too. He tosses his phone to Rylan. “Call all the girls in there and tell them to come party with us or I’ll delete their numbers from my phone.”

“Sure, okay,” Rylan says, fumbling the phone and dropping it into the grass. He grabs it up and turns on the screen. “Password?”

“Oh two, twenty-eight,” Duke says. “Alright, girls. You can grind on my dick and get it hard until the new girls get here to ride it.”

“Come on,” Dixie says, dragging on my arm.

“Sure,” I say, setting down my drink and following her to the dance floor where Magnolia and her two best friends have already started dancing around and gossiping about freshman drama. I wrap my arms around my soft, sexy girlfriend and grind my dick into her ass, and I try not to think about the fact that Duke’s phone unlocks to my sister’s birthday, and how different that situation might have played out if Devlin and Crystal hadn’t run away.

My sister never cared about popularity or the Darling name, but the Dolces cared. Maybe they would have dated her like a normal girl, like she was special because she was a founding daughter. Maybe she’d have ended up with Duke. Maybe she would have stayed.

That train of thought leads me to another girl who’s not here.

“Did you know Gloria moved out of her house?” I ask Dixie, since she knows everything about everyone.

“Her sister told me. I put it onRumor Has It. Are you not looking at my posts?” She turns so she can pout up at me, rubbing her tits on my chest as we dance.

“I do,” I assure her. “I must have missed that one.”

“It’s okay,” she says. “I know you support me.”

“I do,” I say, feeling like shit the way I always do when she gives me too much credit.

“Then why are you so obsessed with what Gloria’s doing?”

“I’m not obsessed,” I say, frowning down at her. “I’m curious why you didn’t tell me.”

“Why would I tell you?” she asks. “It has nothing to do with you. You’re in the elite circle now. She’s not. She’s not going to come to parties with the popular kids. If anything, you should be glad she’s gone, after all she’s done.”

“You’re right,” I say, shaking away the thoughts and trying to concentrate on the girl who’s here, who’s always been here, and not think about the way Gloria begged for me, and the way her cunt tasted on my fingers, and that piercing I never expected. I try not to give meaning to the fact that when she ruined the fantasy of the girl in the pool house, the fantasy that replaced the cutout of the idea of a girl who wanted me is the real thing, a very real girl who wanted me just weeks ago.

“You’re hard,” Dixie whispers, smiling up at me.

“You’re grinding on my dick,” I point out.

If only I could believe that was the reason as easily as she does.

“I’m so happy right now,” she says, sighing and wrapping her arms tighter around my neck, gazing up at me. “I can’t believe it’s finally happened. You’re popular again.We’repopular. We’ll be the king and queen when we go back. We might even win Prom now.”

“Well, you’ve definitely earned it.”

“I love you,” she says, standing on tiptoes to kiss me.

“You too, babe,” I say, squeezing her ass. She closes her eyes and lays her cheek on my chest, and I know that’s enough for her. It should be enough for me, but I can’t shake the hollowness in my chest as we sway together until the song ends.

More cars start to pull up, including Royal and Harper, a bunch of girls for Duke, and Maverick’s El Camino.

“What’shedoing here?” Dixie hisses, her nails biting into my hand. “You’re supposed to be proving that you’re still one of the best families in town. You have to get rid of him, Colt.”
