Maybe her watch was broken. I glanced at her wrist, but she didn’t have one. Phone, then.

“Where are the others?” I asked, taking a seat beside her.

“It’s just us.”

“Oh…” I trailed off, worry finally getting the better of me. “Was it because of me?” I asked. “Because I can go, if…” I shrank. “...if it’s a problem.” My voice was an embarrassing whisper.

She leaned back on the seat, giving me a curious look. “I only invited you.”

“Oh.”

“I didn’t like how catty and jealous they were getting over you.”

I laughed (like an idiot) before I caught her startled expression. My laughter cut off.

Shit.

That wasn’t supposed to be a joke.

“Jealous?” I asked hoarsely.

Roxy snorted. “Do you know how badly Jasmine and Oliver wanted to land the Kingsman pack?”

I stared at her, mouth dry. “No.”

“They were so invested in it that other omegas were making bets on which of them would win. Nobody had a clue since your pack are so quiet.”

“They’re not jealous of… of me.”

“Oh, they are.” Roxy was fighting a smile. “You’ve caused quite the stir.”

“Have I?”

“You come barrelling in—absolute unknown, get claimed by the richest pack in the school, and you have a star on your neck before classes even start. That pack ischasingyou—I even heard Dusk made you a nest.”

Was that going around the whole school?

I slowly sank into the midnight opium jacket, cheeks heating, but Roxy seemed to find that amusing. “And you don’t appear to subscribe to the rules we’ve all been fighting to contend with since the day we perfumed.”

“Don’t… subscribe?”

“You’re completely unapologetic about it, too.”

That sounded like a very nice way of saying I was a complete loser with no social skills. For the record, unapologetic was also inaccurate. I wasverysorry to be like this.

“I don’t know what I’m doing,” I blurted before I could stop myself. And Dusk was a madman for choosing me. That was all. “They’re… chasing me?” I asked, stuck on that.

She laughed, the sound loose and sweet. I hoped my laugh sounded that nice. “Umbra bit youinclass,” she said.

Right. She’d seen that.

“So? He’s an alpha. They do that…” I trailed off at the look she gave me.

“You said you wererustyin omega studies,” she said, folding her arms.

“Okay.” I swallowed. “I’ve never done them.”

“Ha.” She looked smug. “Thought so. Okay. So you’re walking around school with a star that basically means they want to bond you, and now they’re biting you—but it’s not a bond.”
