TWENTY-EIGHT

UMBRA

It was Saturday evening, and I was alone, since Dusk had dragged Shatter out with him.Strategy, he’d told me.

Sure.

But if he wanted to spend more time with her, who was I to argue?

Unfortunately, that left me to contemplate another serious problem as I flicked through my rapidly accruing homework assignments. Apparently, I enjoyedlookingat fish more than I likedlearningabout them.

I was coming to the sad conclusion that Marine biology wasn’t my thing at all. That was fine, it just meant I could spend those classes daydreaming about Shatter.

When I’d woken this morning, she was still in my arms. She’d purred for me all night, and she’d been like a lost puppy when I led her out to breakfast this morning.

As was becoming routine for the weekends, Dusk had ordered food in so she couldn’t complain. I’d led her to the table and sat her down so I could serve her myself. Iwould have brought it to her bed—would even, in the future—but I needed her to see Dusk this morning so she could understand that he was part of the perfection that had been the night before.

She couldn’t take her eyes from me as I loaded a plate up, and when I set her breakfast down she just stared up at me for ages.

It was fucking cute.

She didn’t know what had happened, but I did. Shatter had let me in. And now she was confused because it didn’t scare her like she believed it should.

“Thank you,” she mumbled, taking the plate at last.

I smiled, then leaned down and kissed her. Her fingers wove through my hair for the briefest second before she drew away, glancing to Dusk for a flicker and then to her plate, cheeks pink. I took a seat at her side and grabbed a stack of pancakes.

Dusk looked stunned, which was a rare sight.

“So.” He sat on a bar stool and began cutting up french toast. “How was the night?”

“Shatter figured out she already has everything she needsrighthere.”

“I never said that.” She looked at me with a pout.

“Youshowedme.”

“It only happened because you’re an alpha, and I’m an omega.”

I’d stifled my snort. Both me and Dusk had heard the dejection in those words.

Shewasmy perfect omega.

But, now they were out for the evening, and I slumped down on the edge of my bed, preparing for a dull night of study. I wondered how her and Dusk’s night would go. Might she lethimin more, now?

I smiled at the thought, then swallowed.

CouldI have her?

Was that allowed?

“You paid.”Dusk’s voice rang in my ears. His plea for me to slow down. To stop.

And what about her?

We were protecting her. She needed us. Needed me to convince her like I had last night. Even… even if it was good for me too.

Good?
