Disgust seized me, sinking into the fractured instincts that made me an omega. The air itself was off, crackling broken shards of intangible energy, surging and dying in cycles. I’d never felt anything like it.

Umbra had collapsed to the floor beside his bed. His scent of wolfsbane and blood was toxic and thick... wrong. And his aura...

Oh God.

I let out a low wail as I realised the strange thing flickering in the air... itwashis aura.

Everything else in the world vanished.

I stumbled toward him, instincts I’d once thought didn’t exist, taking control.

ButcouldI fix this?

He was awake, if barely. His knife was in his grip and he was digging it into his arm. Not like I’d seen him do before. He was unsteady, and it was piercing to bone.

“Umbra...” My voice shook as I took his wrist, tears spilling onto him.“Umbra!”

Sandstorm eyes, dazed with agony, drifted to me. My scent was back, I knew by the way his breathing calmed with each inhale.

That was good, but not enough.

“I can’t let go,” he croaked. “Or I w-won’t wake up.”

He would.

I’d claimed him.

I wouldn’t let him die.

My scent wasn’t enough, not yet. I tilted his chin up and pressed my teeth to his neck. He jolted, hand seizing my hair with strength he had no right to.

“No. You might...” He sounded afraid.

A growl tore from my chest. Howdarehe tell me I couldn’t. I ripped free of his grip, ignoring the pain in my scalp, and shoving his fist back. And the knife?

No.

He struggled weakly as I tried to tear the weapon from his trembling hands. He gripped it tight, letting out a wounded, broken sound, the aura in the air shuddering, becoming more unstable.

Fuck…

But the knife wasn’t the answer. I knew it wasn’t.

“Shatter–!”

No.

I threw my whole weight onto his forearm with my knee and his grip spasmed. I grabbed the knife and threw it across the room. He tried to get up, wolfsbane and blood flooding with panic, but I turned on him, shoving him back down, my fist inhishair this time to tug his head back.

“NO!”

But his protest was too late as I sank my teeth into his neck.

Fuck.

I jolted with horror as Umbra rushed into my consciousness.

An omega’s bite formed a connection, if only temporary, and weaker than a pack bond. Yet, in it, I felt the same viciousness in his aura that was in the air. I shuddered, clenching my jaw as it began trying to devour me, too.
