Dark opium choked the clear air of the nest, and his voice was a breath in my ear. “You want my gift, Gem. You take the termsandyour punishment first.”

I stared at him with hatred because he knew the impossible situation he’d put me in. As if I had a choice. He tugged me back a step and then the door was closing. My breath caught as it clicked shut and the nest vanished from sight.

Safety.

That’s what it was. As foul as he was, he had offered me something my instincts had latched onto. Now it was gone, my pulse was erratic and my chest tight.

“Or… you can take your chances running from every cruel alpha pack in Rookwood Academy.”

My palms were damp with sweat as I clutched my fingers together. My hormones were in overdrive. Stress. Anxiety. I’d been in the presence of my mates today. That still shook me. And now the nest—all so he could bully me into being whatever he wanted.

“Are those my only options?” I asked, my voice strained.

He frowned, fixing me with a strange look. “What do you mean?”

“Ifyou’re going to use the photo at every turn, why bother with the nest? Just tell me I have to do what you say, or the picture will go out.”

“Would you prefer that?” he asked.

“Yes.” The answer came before I could even think about it. “You’re trying to pretend this is something it’s not.”

He folded his arms, eyes sliding to Umbra for a moment. Umbra was resting against the wall lazily, seeming content to watch, but gave a shrug. “Lay it out then,” he said. “What’s the threat for the picture?”

“You’re our omega,” Dusk replied instantly. “We are the only ones who get your scent.”

“So…” My heart raced as I glanced between them. “I can decline your nest and your stupid rules.”

Dusk snorted, rolling his eyes. “Yes. You can decline your own fucking nest, and the rules that giveyouboundaries.”

My vision narrowed as I stared at him, and my voice was shrill with rage. “Getting me to do whatever you want isn’t forme!”

“Certainly fucking is.”

I lost it.

My temper had always ruined everything, and still that meant fuck-all when the world bled crimson. I leaped for him with a snarl, fury searing all sanity away. I needed him to hurt, and I didn’t care about the consequences. I easily ducked his outstretched hand as he tried to grab me, caught off guard.

“Fuck—” I screamed, managing to get onto his back, nails out like claws across his face, and neck, and back, anywhere I could reach.“—you!”

I was braced for an aura that never came.

Instead, with a wrenching pain on my temple, Dusk tore me away from him with a solid grip on my hair.

Next thing I knew, he had me slung over his shoulder and was carrying me to the kitchen. I shrieked, trying to kick him, and only succeeded in sliding further down his back, leaving me worse off.

He dropped me, and before I could dive away, he grabbed my arms and pinned them behind my back. Then I was shoved forward, my body bent over what I realised was the arm of the couch.

Fuck—

“W-wait!”

He paused, and I tried to turn or move or—anything. But he was pinning me to the couch with his hips and easily holding me down with one hand. Then he bowed over me, crushing me even harder against the couch.

“Shatter.” His voice was a growl in my ear. I could feel his body against me.

Shit.

He was hard.
