“You made me fight you, Gem. I want a drink before we start,” he said, taking a slow sip. “But show me youcanmanage if I give you back some control.”

I wanted to cry, but there was too much slick leaking down my thighs right now for that to even feel fucking real. That was normal,I told myself. It just meant I was an omega.

It didn’t mean I likedhim.

“Everything gets easier if you stop fighting him,” Umbra murmured to me. “Learned that the hard way.”

I grabbed the nearest pillow and buried my face in it, not willing to look at them any longer.

It took too long, and I didn’t even begin examining why, during that time, I was so aroused. He was a fucking alpha, the likes of which I had never been near before. Even back on the Estate, the alphas I’d been around had been either older or bonded. I wasn’t prepared for the reaction my body had to the scents of packs like this one.

Biology was a cunt, and that was all.

I’d still stab him if I had the chance, thatI was sure of at least.

Finally, I heard him stand, and I dared to peer from the cushion, to see him approach. Unsteady relief flooded my system that this would be over soon.

I felt the brush of his jeans against my thighs again and tensed, unsure of what to expect.

I jumped at the warmth of his touch between my thighs.

Fuck… That was way too close to?—

“You’re soaked, Gem.” His finger trailed the sensitive inner flesh of my thighs and I tried to wriggle away, knowing how much slick he’d feel.

His hand came down on my waist, holding me firmly in place.

So slowly, his fingers trailed down, down, down—all the way to my knee. And then his touch was gone, a low laugh in his chest.

“You can go.”

That was all he said.

I paused, still bent over the couch, shivering.

It took me a long time to pull myself straight, eyes everywhere but Umbra or Dusk.

I swallowed, tugging my dress down, for all the good that did the glistening of my thighs.

“I don’t u-understand.”

With a quick glance, there was only faint humour in his expression. My stomach dropped.

I’d disappointed him. I knew it.

This was my fault, somehow.

“Accept the nest and the rules that come with it, and I’ll punish you for every bratty thing you’ve done. Until then, there arenorules—though I’d guess getting wet to the ankles for an alpha who isn’t your mate might be punishment enough.”

I couldn’t take my eyes from his cold stare, shrinking beneath it. When I tried to edge from between him and the couch, he caught me.

“Where are you sleeping tonight?” he asked.

“What do you mean?”

“You rejected the nest. You sleep with me, or you sleep with Umbra.” When the silence stretched, he finally gave me one of his cocky half smiles I was growing all too familiar with. “I assume it’s Umbra.”

I opened my mouth, argument already on my lips before I scowled. Then I ripped my arm from his grip and edged around the couch, grinding my words out with difficulty. “It’s the couch. I’m staying on the couch.”
