She reached out with her arm, hugging the blanket against herself, blue registration card clutched in her fist. “H-he doesn’t even know me. Why would he do that?”

I cleared my throat as Umbra began handing her wads of tissues so she could blow her nose.

Uh…whyhad he? I hadn’t actually planned this far ahead.

She gave me some breathing room. Her expression became horrified as she blew her nose and discovered how much she was dripping. I hid my humour, since she’d probably take it as an insult.

After a small mountain of tissues had accumulated at her side, she looked back at me expectantly.

“I told him you were…” I trailed off. Staying with us? I didn’t want this tied to anything ongoing, courting or not. “He hired a new guy for this kind of job. Needed a test run to see how good he was.”

“Oh… okay.” She hugged the card closer, looking relieved. Then her eyes clouded with worry again. “So it’s just… temporary or something?”

“It’s all legit. Permanent.”

“Can I see?” Umbra asked her. She was so emotional she burst into tears again, clambering closer to him and sitting on the edge of the bed so she could show him.

“He said my scent was poppies and elderberries.” There was a quivering smile on her lips as she looked over the card again. “And he changed my last name to Kingsman…” Her brows drew down.

I froze, anticipating the storm.

Her eyes were wide as she turned the card back toward herself to double check.

“He did?” Umbra asked, also shooting me a confused look.

“Yeh…” Shatter’s voice cracked. “For some reason…?”

I buried my grin. She was just so charminglyliteral. “Sure,” I said, clearing my throat. “We’ll go with that.”

She barely heard me, though, and I took the opportunity to pinch the papers on the bottom of the stack and tuck them in my pocket. She was so overwhelmed right now. I’d keep them for another time—perhaps when I was in the mood for a bit of omega rage.

“Can I meet him?” she asked. “Is he well enough?”

Was he well?

What did she know?

I glanced at Umbra, who just shrugged, giving me a‘no big deal’look.

“Soon enough,” I said.

Her face drained of colour. “Did you…?” She cleared her throat. “What about my scent?”

“What about it?”

“What if he doesn’t like it, and—” Her voice cracked, her whole body shrinking as she hugged the card closer. “What if?—?”

“He knows your scent.”

“Oh.” She seemed stumped by that. “And he… he liked it?” Her cheeks went pink at the question, but I answered before she could reword it.

“Even more than we do.”

I saw the twitch of a smile on Umbra’s face out of the corner of my eye.

Shatter stared at me, not seeming to know what to do with that. After a long silence, she glanced between me and Umbra. “Okay. I think I’m done now. You can go.”

I snorted but got to my feet, feeling rather pleased.
