I froze. That was Oliver’s voice floating from the hallway beyond.

“That was a power play,” Jasmine’s voice came in reply, which wasn’t a surprise since they were often together.

I shrank against the cream wallpaper, the texture of its flowery swirls pressing against my back where my dress dipped down. The last I’d seen or heard from them was that night at the party.

They were talking about me, no doubt about it.

“Showing off her eyesanda dark bond in one night? And if what the Lincoln pack said was true about her pining over them?” Jasmine laughed. “Here—” She cut off. “Check the back straps, will you? I don’t think they’re right.”

I heard a muffled sound, and then Jasmine continued. “If you ask me, they were toying with her, acting to the school like they’re obsessed, but I think they were taunting her. When she tried to make a run for it to the Lincoln pack…” She trailed off. “They’re predators. The only interesting alphas in this place.”

I chewed on my lip. That was good, though. It was exactly what I wanted. What Dusk wanted.

“You think so? The way Varis was looking at her?—”

“She’s his prize. Of course he was?—”

The conversation halted as heeled footsteps approached. A brunette beta with a shimmery black dress and matching purse came around the corner, giving me a little smile as she passed me into the bathroom.

At that moment, Roxy appeared at my side, ready to go, but I put a finger to my lips, giving her a meaningful look. She closedthe last few steps with a frown, careful about keeping her heels as quiet as possible.

“You believe what they said about her asking for those bites?” Oliver asked after a moment.

“Come on.” Jasmine sounded amused. “You’ve seen her. She’s pathetic, actually admitted to following them around and watching in? And if she thought it was going to get her a bond from them? Plus, someone said her scent is god awful so she probably is desperate.”

“Yet, you want to take a run at them tonight?” Oliver asked.

“That was the plan,” Jasmine replied.

Roxy’s eyebrows shot up and I frowned.Jasmine wanted to try for the Lincoln pack? She already had a pack, a good one.

“You’re not worried about how they look after that?”

“Like I give a damn. Besides, I don’t think that gold pack slut knows how to handle alphas, anyone can see that. Give me a run, I’ll have them around my little finger. I want to show her how a real omega does it. She was a mess in that video, stammering all over the place—and she thought they might keep her?” I could hear the sneer in her voice.

The old, wounded part of me wilted, the part that was always worried about never being good enough as an omega.

“She gives us a bad name,” Jasmine went on. “Plus, the North Prince pack are so dull. I need a challenge.”

“No way for you to take your shot without the whole room seeing,” Oliver replied.

“That’s fine.” Jasmine laughed. “The North Prince pack know I’m trying for it.”

“They’re okay with that?” He sounded surprised.

“Told them if I failed tonight, I’d stick around for my heat. Dan hasn’t got a clue I’ve been winding him up on purpose. He’s near a rut. He told the others to shut up about it if they had a problem.”

Roxy wrinkled her nose in disgust, but Oliver laughed. “That’show you got them so obsessed with you?”

“Piece of cake.”

Their talk died down as I heard more footsteps passing.

It sounded like a group of girls who’d had a bit to drink. They were giggling and I could hear snippets of their conversation even from here.

“...dresses and makeup are iconic. Talk about an entrance. They both look like queens.”

“I wish I had an alpha to put me on a throne,” another said. “Gold pack or not, I’m jealous.”
