“Accident?” he asked. “Yet, if you heard what I said, you stayed right to the end.”

My lips parted as I scrambled through my sluggish mind to find an answer to that.

“I told you, people notice how much you watch us.I’venoticed. I’ve been wondering about it for a while.”

“It’s not what it looks like,” I said, trying to untangle this all with a swamped mind. I didn’t understand. Earlier he’d said he liked that.

“Tell me why you were there.”

I had to set this straight. “I… followed you.”

“And?”

Fuck. But he knew, already. “I… I saw you and Roxy in the library, and then things got heated?—”

“Did you leave?”

“No…” My voice was weak. But he knew that, too.

“Why?”

“I…” My eyes dropped to the floor, crushing my pencil case in my grip.

Because Dusk found me before I could… You’d have stayed anyway, Shatter.

Because you’re my mate…

I couldn’t say it.

Not before I’d talked to Roxy, and she’d helped me figure this all out.

But how did I make it not sound that bad? I couldn’t figure him out—if he was angry, or disappointed, or what? He was changing too often, and the world was still unsteady. “I was… I was interested in you.”

“Me or the whole pack?”

“Um…” Fuck. “The pack. But it doesn’t mean anything, I swear.”

“You stayed to watch me fucking your best friend. But it doesn’t mean anything?”

My stomach dropped. I couldn’t let him discover we were mates yet. “No. It… It was just… like a crush. It was stupid.”

His eyebrows shot up like he hadn’t expected that.

Fuck.

“A crush?” he asked. “You have a crush on us?”

I swallowed. Not the characterization I would choose. Not great if Roxy heard, either, but I couldn’t find a way to un-commit, and I didn’t know how else to explain this away. “Y-yes.”

“Yet we offered you a chance at our pack, and you’re here to see our omega, not us?”

I stared at him, lips parted, unable to come up with an answer to that. “It’s complicated.”

Dammit.

I wish I could read him.

“Complicated?”
